Your skincare should evolve with the seasons, and with summer fast approaching, now is the perfect time for a refresh. We sat down with Dr. Julia Tauscher of Village Dermatology in Mountain Brook, AL, to learn about common warm-weather skin concerns, the best products and aesthetic treatments to combat them, and why now is an ideal time to schedule a visit.

Spring Skincare Refresh: What to Add to Your Routine

Warmer weather means stronger UV rays and more time spent outdoors, which increases our risk of skin damage and hyperpigmentation. This makes sun protection a top skincare priority, but it goes beyond using any old SPF. “If you’re prone to hyperpigmentation, you definitely want to use sunscreen with a tint,” says Dr. Tauscher. “Before putting on your sunscreen, you may also want to use an antioxidant or vitamin C serum to add that additional UV protection.”

For these vitamin C and antioxidant serums, Dr. Tauscher recommends a few of her favorites: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum and Skinbetter Alto Advanced Serum.

To help minimize dark spots that appear in the spring and summer, she also suggests incorporating retinol into your evening routine. “Skinbetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream is a good option,” Dr. Tauscher says. “It’s got a very effective retinol that doesn’t cause much, if any, irritation.”

3 Aesthetic Treatments to Prep for Summer

In addition to incorporating new products into your daily routine, Dr. Tauscher suggests a few aesthetic treatments that you can begin using now to prepare your skin for summer. “If you’re trying to feel and look carefree this summer, lay the groundwork now so you look even better this upcoming season,” she tells us.

BBL & Moxi

For the perfect summer glow and an even skin tone, consider combining broadband light therapy (BBL) and a treatment called Moxi. BBL is an energy-based therapy that uses light to reduce dark spots and redness, while the Moxi laser stimulates collagen production for a naturally radiant look.

“This combination preps you for that ‘no-makeup make-up look,'” adds. Dr. Tauscher. “Your skin looks softer, your pores look tighter, and overall, you look kind of airbrushed.”

Neurotoxins

To enhance your skin’s natural glow, smooth lines, and reduce sweat (a major bonus during warmer months!), Dr. Tauscher recommends using neurotoxins like Botox. These small injectables help relax and soften the muscles that often cause expression lines.

“The treatment typically takes about five minutes,” says Dr. Tauscher. “Tiny needles are placed through the skin between the eyes and forehead, and sometimes around the eyes in the crow’s feet.”

Biostimulators

Another way to boost collagen while simultaneously restoring your natural volume is with biostimulators — a great option for patients in their 40s and 50s. Dr. Tauscher often recommends treatments like Sculptura or Hyperdilute Radiesse.

“These are collagen stimulators placed just under the skin, and you can think of them as a sort of ‘collagen fertilizer,'” she explains. “After treatment, over the subsequent months, they give you a refreshed, brighter, and tighter look.”

Why Village Dermatology?

With so many treatments and products in the skincare market, it can feel overwhelming to figure out which one is best for you. Dr. Tauscher recommends visiting Village Dermatology’s Live a Beautiful Life (LABL) Skincare Studio to speak with one of their full-time educators.

“They work one-on-one with customers to optimize their skincare routine or develop one from scratch,” she explains. “They can advise on all skincare product questions, like Where does this product fit into my routine? Which tinted sunscreens are best for melasma? Where should I splurge, and where can I save?
