Vicksburg, MS, may be best known for its rich Civil War history, but the city also boasts a surprisingly vibrant art scene. The historic streets are filled with beautiful public art installations, one-of-a-kind galleries, and unexpected artistic treasures around almost every corner. Add in the annual Hipstoric Art Festival, and there’s never been a better time to experience a different side of Vicksburg. (And wait until you see the Vicksburg murals!)

Where History Becomes Art

At the intersection of art and history lies Vicksburg National Military Park. Filled with monuments, memorials, and sculptures, this park has been transformed into something that’s more than just your stereotypical historical site.

The self-guided Art of Commemoration audio tour offers an in-depth look at this collection, which includes more than 1,400 works of art and architecture valued at $4 to $5 billion. As you stroll the grounds, you’ll spot everything from bronze figures to carved stone inscriptions and awe-inspiring architectural monuments.

Discover Downtown’s Colorful Creative Spirit

In downtown Vicksburg, the city’s creative energy runs high with more than 50 murals spanning buildings, alleyways, and riverfront spaces.

As the name suggests, the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals, created mostly by artist Robert Dafford, stretch along the city’s riverfront and reflect three defining elements of the city’s history: the river, the railroad, and the highway. Each mural captures a moment from Vicksburg’s past through bold colors and larger-than-life imagery, turning a simple river walk into a visual journey through time.

Just a few blocks away, the “Wings on Washington” murals transform Gordon’s Alley into an immersive corridor, with artwork filling the entire alleyway.

Even familiar brands become part of the city’s visual storytelling. Coca-Cola™ murals scattered throughout downtown nod to Vicksburg’s place in beverage history as the spot where the iconic soft drink was first bottled. The result is a mix of nostalgia, commerce, and art that feels unmistakably Vicksburg.

For those who want to explore at an easier pace, the city’s Heritage Walking Trails and attractions passport both provide a self-guided way to connect murals, landmarks, and historic sites into one cohesive experience.

Beyond the murals, Vicksburg’s local gallery scene holds its own with plenty of opportunities for exploration. Start with the Attic Gallery, the oldest independently owned art gallery in Mississippi. This cornerstone of Vicksburg’s arts scene for more than 50 years is an eclectic mix of regional artwork ranging from paintings and pottery to jewelry and sculpture.

Another standout is the H.C. Porter Gallery, which is home to the acclaimed Mississippi artist known for her mixed-media work inspired by Southern culture and history. Her bold, layered pieces often explore themes of community, resilience, and storytelling.

Families and outdoor lovers should also make time to visit Catfish Row Children’s Art Park. The lively public space combines creativity, green space, and riverfront views in the heart of downtown Vicksburg. Little ones will love playing in the splash fountain and soaking in the children’s art.

Admire Rare Tiffany Stained Glass

You might also be surprised to learn that Vicksburg is home to several rare Tiffany stained-glass installations.

At the Church of the Holy Trinity, six Tiffany stained-glass windows illuminate the historic sanctuary with intricate detail and rich color. Nearby, Christ Episcopal Church features two additional Tiffany windows, each adding another layer to the city’s artistic and architectural significance.
