Have you heard about Mayor Karl Dean’s initiative to encourage residents of Nashville to walk 100 miles by July 9th? While this might sound daunting, it’s really not. With 51 days left until the big day, if you average about 2 miles a day, you are there.
Now, while Mayor Dean would like to see you out enjoying Nashville’s greenways and parks, the cicadas may be keeping some at bay. As for us at StyleBlueprint, we say embrace the wonder of these amazing bugs. Really, they only appear every 13 years and only buzz for a few weeks…deal with it! Even if you go to the mall or hit a treadmill, don’t give-up on your 100 miles. The Mayor is not saying this to make his jeans fit better, he’s saying it because a healthier Nashville is better for everyone who lives here. We envision the day when Nashville ranks among the fittest cities in America. You can be part of that change!
To figure out just how far you are walking, we suggest the Fitbit. This amazing device is a modern-day pedometer, but so much better. Simply slip this into your pocket and off you go. It’s tiny. No need to clip on your shoe or belt. And, it works on elliptical machines. (How is that possible, you ask? Something about 3D motion sensors… check it out. You’ll be as amazed as we are.) Even better, you can download your distances and
compete with encourage your friends’ daily or weekly goals. Nothing like an extra 10PM lap around the neighborhood to best your competitor’s walking score support your good friends, right?
The Fitbit will encourage you to park your car further away, take the stairs AND explore the amazing greenways and parks that Nashville has to offer.
All this walking will have another great outcome: you are likely to sleep better. Who doesn’t want that? And, the Fitbit can track the quality of your sleep as well. Feeling tired? Perhaps you are waking up throughout the night. Fitbit can show that so you can adjust your bedtime accordingly. Oh, it counts calories too. Amazing.
Now, to be clear, Mayor Dean is not advocating that everyone buy the $99 Fitbit. In fact, to our knowledge, he hasn’t mentioned the device. But at StyleBlueprint, we think that the 100-mile walk initiative and this product have merit, and if you embrace both, you are likely to succeed not only in walking 100 miles in the short term, but in living a healthier life long term, as well.
Come on Nashville (and anyone reading, for that matter), this is your LIFE! Live it well. Walk some more.
