Outside the front door of The Registry, a sign reads in chalk: “Whenever you are creating beauty around you, you are restoring your own soul.”
This quaint gift store, located on Main Street in historic downtown Franklin, is a place of visual beauty. As its name implies, The Registry carries a distinctive selection of fine china, tableware and bridal gifts. But as store owners Kathy and Jane are keen to add, you don’t have to be tying the knot in order to shop at The Registry.
Aside from brides-to-be, The Registry caters to discerning shoppers of any kind—from women who are celebrating their birthdays or anniversaries to avid entertainers who simply want to pamper themselves.
“Our motto is that you don’t have to be a bride to register,” says Kathy. “We have everything from jewelry to beach bags to birthday gifts. We’ve even had people come in just to buy an egg slicer!”
Inside the store, you’ll find a variety of timeless pieces—think luxurious silverware, gorgeous china and stunning glassware. Although much of the inventory is high end (including name brands like Herend, Royal Crown Derby, Vagabond and Arte Italica), you can find a variety of price points. In addition to bridal gifts, The Registry has a selection of baby gifts for expectant moms, so there’s truly something for everyone—engagement ring or no.
The tradition of the wedding registry dates back to 1924, when Marshall Field in Chicago unveiled a handwritten system to help wedding guests select gifts. Since then, the tradition has become standard practice for brides across the country, and some women are now extending the concept to create baby registries for baby showers. The purpose behind a wedding registry is twofold: It takes the guesswork out of gifting, and it also helps stock the newlyweds’ home with essential household items, from blenders to dish sets to silverware. While The Registry does have a website with electronic registries, they mainly conduct business the old-fashioned way: via face-to-face interactions, exceptional customer service and meaningful relationships with clients.
“That’s what sets us apart from, say, a Bloomingdale’s or Nordstrom,” says Jane. “We have personal assistants on hand who will assist with everything and anything you need.”
Daunted by the idea of selecting a registry? Fear not: One of The Registry’s knowledgeable personal assistants is on hand to make recommendations and suggest items you didn’t even know you needed. Need something gift wrapped? A staff member will meet you at the back door with your wrapped gift waiting for you.
It’s this mom-and-pop approach to customer service that makes shopping at The Registry a truly unforgettable experience. Services aren’t limited solely to locals, either. Couples from around the country have registered at the shop, drawn by its reputation for quality and customer service.
The Registry has been a Franklin mainstay for more than 10 years, and in that time it has evolved from a gift shop into a true gathering spot. “Our customers have become like family to us,” Kathy says. “People know that they can come here for a friendly, welcoming shopping experience.”
So whether you’re newly engaged, celebrating a special event or simply want to treat yourself (in which case, hey, more power to you!), make The Registry your destination for all of your décor and gift needs.
