I was chatting with the manager of Imogene + Willie last week about a mutual friend. We both agreed our friend was one of the most stylish women we knew, but in a subtle and understated way. If you peaked into her closet, you wouldn’t see much, but what’s there, is fabulous. Each selection in her wardrobe speaks to the following: it fits perfectly, it is well made with high-quality construction and, finally, has incredible staying power– meaning it will look good next season too!
For this fall and winter season, less is better, and if you can get the following three items right: black blazer, white shirt and a pair of jeans, then you will decrease your wardrobe malfunctions dramatically.
For a jacket –like the I+W one featured above– to be worth the investment, it needs to be impeccably tailored to fit your frame. Blouses, too, for that matter.
And the great thing about a basic, well-tailored black jacket is how versatile it is. It works with jeans, as in the photo above, but imagine it also over a cocktail dress, or paired with the white blouse, below, and a pencil skirt. Timeless, and perfectly chic.
Somewhere along the line in America, we began to replace quantity with quality. The idea that bigger is better plays out everywhere: in our automobiles, our restaurants, our homes, but most of all, in the way we buy our clothes. And I am as guilty of this as anyone. If I need a quick fix, I usually grab something without much consideration of the fit, quality or timelessness of the piece.
Take a look in your own closet and give yourself the litmus test of fit, quality and staying power.
And, I know I said you only need three things for the season, but since I am a complete rule breaker, I am going to throw in one more item…. Get yourself a pair of rockin’ cowboy boots.
Note: If you are interested in the the blazer and white shirt, the shirt is available in store and online as of next Friday, Oct. 7th. The blazer is available to pre-order at the store now; you can order online starting next Friday, Oct. 7th.
