Marcia Masulla pretty much oozes cool and we know this, even though we’ve never actually met her. But, since we follow both her personal twitter feed and her YelpNashville handle, we’re pretty sure that she has much more fun than we do. Our online friendship makes us glad that Marcia calls Nashville home. As the Nashville Yelp girl, she is truly plugged into our locally-owned businesses and events. Whenever we stop by our favorite stores and restaurants they often say, “Do you know Marcia Masulla? You need to know Marcia!” Now, we just need to meet up for drinks and talk the old school way — you know, face to face!
Where did you grow up?
I giggle at this question because I have enjoyed all the “growing up” I have done in Nashville since I moved here in June of 2008. I made the voyage from St. Louis, where I spent most of my adolescence (with a brief stint in NYC for school) and literally “started over” here. It was a tougher transition than I first expected, but this city has been very good to me and is truly my home now.
Why did you move to Nashville?
I clearly like to ramble, as I already gave you most of the scoop above! A sense of curiosity, sense of adventure, sprinkled with a bit of love is what lured me here. I was pretty comfy and set in good ol’ St. Louie as a boutique owner and stylist/radio show and television host, and was very involved in the community in various ways, but I was itching for a change and Nashville charmed me to bits when I visited for a photo shoot. I miss my beloved St. Louis Cardinals though!
What was the most surprising thing about Nashville based on your preconceived notions?
I was really impressed with the progressive tone of this city regarding everything from music, fashion, and the arts to even values and politics! Nashville is simply THE place to be right now.
What is the greatest piece of advice you have been given?
My mother was really into quotes and passed some of them onto me when I was growing up. They always possessed incredible insight. Here are a few of my favorites:
“Lose your dreams and you might lose your mind.” -Mick Jagger
“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”-Coco Chanel
“Somebody once asked me if I ever went up to the plate trying to hit a home run. I said, ‘Sure, every time.'”-Mickey Mantle
“The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn.” -Gloria Steinem
Favorite thing about working for Yelp?
Real reviews by real people aren’t the only thing that we focus on. Yelp is a website that connects communities with independent business, events and one another! I am so proud to be part of such an interactive, emerging, and incredibly fun company. The sky is truly the limit.
With a job that keeps you busy, how do you center yourself?
3 words: Hot Yoga Nashville.
What is your favorite under-the-radar boutique or restaurant in Nashville?
I am a loud and proud East Nashvillian and have to brag about our vintage mecca that includes Goodbuy Girls, Diamond Star Halo Vintage, and Hip Zipper all located in Five Points. Oh, and Old Made Good.* It’s fabulous. If you did any investigating with my Yelp check-ins, you’d see that 308 is always at the top of my list. Spectacular cocktails and ambiance… bottoms up!

What books can be found on your bedside table?
- Currently: Life by Keith Richards. Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll = JUICY!
- Normal Will Get You Nowhere by Kelly Cutrone. She was my inspiration when I was a lowly 19 year old student intern during NYC Fashion Week and continues to be, still. I had the incredible experience of working with her for Nashville Fashion Week. She. Gets. It. Done. Much respect!
- Back issues (3 month’s worth) of Vanity Fair, Vogue, Rolling Stone, W, Elle, Under The Radar. Oh the guilt….
Favorite thing to do on a Saturday night?
Get into mischief… let’s just say that my nickname is Bengal Tiger and if I divulged any more information, things could get really interesting.
Favorite TV shows?
Modern Family, The Daily Show, Mad Men, Chelsea Lately, Saturday Night Live and, well, fine… I’ll admit it, The Real Housewives of NYC/New Jersey/Atlanta.
Event most looking forward to attending in Sept?
2nd Annual nD Festival to benefit the Belcourt Theatre. Hands down!
What is your “must-have” purchase for FALL 2011.
I am OBSESSED with many of the Baroque bohemian-inspired Fall looks. Sumptuous textures and flamboyant shades. Hello, Anna Sui. I see you. I am also beyond thrilled that I am finally adding a pair of the Elsie Plus Wash Imogene & Willie jeans to my closet as a little treat for my birthday! Took me long enough!
Do you have a playlist for a dinner party you can share with our readers?
This is a loaded question, as I could go on for days. Literally. Here is my feeble attempt:
Anything and everything from Mr. Tom Petty, The Strokes, Middle Brother, Lou Reed, JayZ, The Kills, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Beirut, T Rex, Cold War Kids, Beck, The Thermals, Avett Brothers, Menomena, The Black Keys, and of course mad props to Nashville’s finest The Honeymoon Thrillers, Madi Diaz, Kopecky Family Band and Chancellor Warhol. I said too much, right?
Name three things you can’t live without (excluding friends, family and God)
Thank goodness you want me to think outside of the “awards show speech” mentality…
1. My beloved pups, Chico & Bellini
2. Vino. Lots of it.
3. My iPhone (for music/texting/email) Could you imagine?
