We’re starting the next month with one thought … and it doesn’t even have to do with our Halloween decor. October means fall has set in, and we’re looking for any chance we can to get outside and enjoy the beautiful new season. In embracing the Nashville outdoors and pleasant temperatures, we’re looking to officially welcome autumn at the Cheekwood Fall Harvest Dinner, raise a stein to Nashville Oktoberfest and gather the family to celebrate all things Halloween at downtown Franklin’s Pumpkinfest.
We always have so much fun gathering a talented team for our What to Wear photoshoots, and this group was no exception. Hostess extraordinaire and curator of boutique dinner parties, Bailey Rae, and Assistant at Creative Artists Agency, Reid Cifrino, joined together to model these adorable looks for the upcoming October events. Katie Rushton and her fierce team from Effortless Style carefully planned and gathered these nine ensembles, pulling from some of our local favorite spots: ABLE, Gus Mayer and K. McCarthy.
Here’s what to wear this month!
The Event: Cheekwood Fall Harvest Dinner
- October 7, 2018
- Elevated casual attire
- 6 p.m.
- Cheekwood Estate & Gardens
- Tickets start at $150. Register here.
We firmly believe that the arrival of fall deserves more than an excited exclamation about new coffee flavors, so we’re looking at Cheekwood to pull out all the stops in properly welcoming this season. The first Sunday in October, enjoy delicious Italian cuisine, a prosecco wine tasting and a magical evening under the October skies at the Cheekwood Fall Harvest Dinner, presented by The Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee. It’s hard to be sad about bidding goodbye to summer when we have such a warm welcome to fall in the beautiful Bradford Robertson Color Garden.
What to Wear: Even though we officially acknowledge a new season at this event, we know very well that October 7 warrants a number of possibilities when it comes to temperatures. When heading to enjoy the delicious sips at the al fresco dinner under the stars, we recommend that you consider an elevated casual look. Think about a nice pair of cropped pants with layers on top to ensure that you are prepped for a warmer evening and also a true fall breeze. Don’t forget that adding a layer doesn’t have to be boring — we think it’s the perfect time to get creative with your choice and opt for a fun print or new fit.
The Event: Nashville Oktoberfest

The Nashville Oktoberfest is a serious tradition, one that dates back to 1980 to be exact. Join over a quarter of a million people for four days this October on the streets of Germantown in celebration of all things brewed. Among the calendar of events, enjoy the annual 5K Bier Run, bratwurst eating contest, pup parade, local vendors, live music and, of course, a solid lineup of beer on tap. For all of you ambitious beer lovers, we recommend you head to Von Elrod’s October 5-7 for Vontoberfest, and start your Oktoberfest celebrations even earlier with a special indoor/outdoor party featuring, you guessed it, brews!
What to Wear: Whether you’re stopping in for a few hours or planning for the four-day long haul at Oktoberfest, ensure your outfit is comfortable. We love that the arrival of October also means that we can break out some of those quintessential fall colors. A pair of jeans and solid sweater or a simple dress and staple denim jacket can provide the level of chic and versatility that will allow for all of your brewery hopping and bratwurst eating you may have planned!
The Event: Pumpkinfest
- October 27, 2018
- Casual attire
- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Downtown Franklin
- Free and open to all
For years, families around Nashville have flocked to the streets of historic downtown Franklin for the highly anticipated celebration of Halloween at Pumpkinfest. Gather your entire clan for a day filled with face painting, pony rides and games, costume contests, live entertainment, pumpkin carving and more. Kids of all ages will have a blast at this Halloween festival on Main Street. Also, make sure you stop by to submit your guess for the weight of the illustrious Great Pumpkin!
What to Wear: When you’re thinking about running around between craft stations, balancing the busy schedule of events and walking around, it’s important that you choose your outfit wisely. We recommend opting for a reliable pant or comfortable dress. And a sizable purse is a wise choice as well. We love using a backpack as your most seamless travel tote yet!
