Today’s post is written by Megan LaRussa, style coach and style director of Southern Femme:
The fashion world moves faster than the speed of light. Fast fashion retailers have exploded with popularity across the globe, from Topshop to H&M to Zara. Even couture designers are producing seasonal collections far in advance, and we fashionphiles don’t even have a chance to embrace one collection before the next one is knocking down the doors at Saks Fifth Avenue.
What’s next on the fast moving fashion agenda? The answer: Resort 2013. This small pre-spring collection is typically known as the ‘jetsetter’ collection, as it hits stores right before Christmas when a select few enjoy jetting away to warmer climates.
This brings me to the real question, which my style coaching clients ask me every year: “When it’s still winter outside, why would I want to buy resort clothing if I’m not traveling anywhere warm?” In a nutshell, here are the top 3 reasons why you should embrace Resort Collections and, more importantly, ways to incorporate them into your own wardrobe…
1. Wear Now, Wear Later
One of the most important elements that I educate my style coaching clients on is creating a mix-and-match wardrobe. This allows you to have a more expansive, fulfilling and diverse wardrobe. Here’s an example of how you can take a resort garment and wear it during the winter months and later this spring.

2. Get the Crème de la Crème
There’s a reason why people say, “First Come, First Served,” and yes, ladies, this applies to the fashion industry. My point is, shop when the resort collections hit your favorite stores and stock up on a few fun pieces that will carry you into spring and summer. You’ll be glad you did, because those who wait until the end of the season often find they have slim pickings with sizes and styles.
3. Sneak Preview
Resort collections are often considered to be a precursor to the Spring/Summer collections. Thus, educate yourself on the latest trends, and more importantly, which ones suit your style, body type and lifestyle when the resort clothing arrives in stores. If you do this, you’ll be less likely to feel overwhelmed or purchase items that aren’t right for you come spring.
