Let’s Talk Turkey (Neck) and How to Lose Yours!

June 20, 2016 by StyleBlueprint Editors

Ladies, we can say “turkey neck,” and you know exactly what we’re talking about, right? The dreaded skin sag between the chin and neck that often happens as we age or perhaps put on a few pounds? Dare we call it a … double chin!? Sometimes excess weight can contribute to this unsightly feature that many women wish gone, but it’s not always the cause. In fact, “There are plenty of folks out there who are at their ideal weight, and some who are even under weight, who still have that excess fat under their chin,” says Dr. Grayson Woods, founder of Woods Aesthetics. Well grab a Kleenex and dry up, because we have great news — there’s a new non-surgical treatment option available. Kybella is a new FDA-approved treatment that dissolves fat under the chin through a series of small injections. A great alternative to going under the knife, Kybella is yielding fabulous results. “The procedure is similar to Botox,” explains Dr. Woods, “but the injections are smaller and more dispersed.”

Look at the dramatic results this patient is enjoying thanks to Kybella.

Prior to administering the injections, Dr. Woods numbs the area with an ice pack and then covers it with a small grid, which guides her where to inject the Kybella, anywhere from 10 to 25 spots, depending on how much fat there is. On average, though, she says two vials are sufficient to get the job done. The patient comes in for the first treatment and returns 6 to 8 weeks later for a repeat treatment depending on desired results.

Recovery time is minimal and includes a little bit of swelling for a couple of weeks. The easy recovery is due to the active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, which is the fat-burning molecule naturally occurring in the body. What’s happening behind the scenes is that Kybella is attacking the walls of the fat cells, and the body is absorbing everything, which brings us to the best news of all — once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good. “And Kybella is very safe. In these large studies, there were no serious, long-term adverse events,” Dr. Woods adds. Wins all around!

With her patients enjoying such great results, Dr. Woods wanted to give Kybella a try herself. “After only one treatment, the results were impressive and I had no discomfort,” she says. “And that’s what most of us want, right? Impressive results without major surgery or scars? Kybella does that.” And the action doesn’t stop at the chin, because the neck is transformed as well. “I now have more chin definition, and the sag — what I call ‘early turkey neck’ — is gone.” (#jealous)

Here's a front view that shows how much of an improvement can be made with Kybella!

Because Kybella has only been available for about a year, Dr. Woods is currently one of only a handful of Nashville-area medical pros who can offer it to patients, all of whom have been thrilled with the results. And to be fair, at $600 a vial, it’s not cheap, but really, can you put a price on happiness? “I actually love how I look in pictures now,” says a patient of Dr. Woods, who prefers to remain anonymous. “I don’t cringe when someone wants to take pictures at parties.” Can we get a “gobble, gobble”?

So if Kybella, which Dr. Woods calls “liposuction in a syringe,” can melt away the God-awful turkey neck, we are obviously curious about the impact it can have on our thighs. “Kybella isn’t approved for other body areas,” says Dr. Woods, “but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was coming.” Well color us hopeful!

Woods Aesthetics is located at 4322 Harding Pike, Ste. 329, Nashville, TN 37205. In addition to Kybella, Woods Aesthetics offers laser hair removal, medical-grade peels, Botox, skin rejuvenation and more. To learn more, visit them online or call (615) 630-6969.
