Just a few weeks ago, I couldn’t imagine what a fitness facility could offer that was unique and different from the sea of options available. Then, I found out about two places opening up with a focus on small classes and high energy, explosive fun. Embracing the philosophy that bigger is not better, StyleBlueprint is totally lovin’ both KRANK and Results Fitness.
Conveniently located in Green Hills, on Bandywood next to Woo, Krank was developed by Sarah Jane Hill and Zane Griggs who worked together as personal trainers after moving to Nashville from the west coast–Zane in ’97 and Sarah Jane in ’05. Each had a special focus on weight loss and a desire to take their services to another level. They presented the idea to Kelly Dunn, a client of Sarah Jane’s, who, with her husband Jeff, partnered with them to create Krank.
Krank offers two types of classes in addition to their personal training: the Hybrid Cylcle and the Krank.
After trying out one of the hybrid cycle classes, I can see how people get addicted. My husband is going every chance he gets. It’s hard, really hard, but your body doesn’t ache afterwards the way it can after a high impact class. This class mimics the cardio of road biking and adds a series of upper body and core strength exercises. It crams the equivalent of a two hour fast bike ride into one 60 minute class. The first 20 minutes are so hard, but then your endorphins are released and that runner’s (or biker’s?!) high takes over, helping you push through to the end. The room is dim, the music is loud and you get one heck of a workout – all while on one stationary bike.
I have not tried the Krank class…yet. But the buzz is absolutely huge. I am so excited, though, as I love a challenging class that can be modified to fit my needs. The small class size (only 8 per class) ensures this possibility. The workout is full body and explosive with sandbags, TRX, Halo Bells, UGI balls and a lot of gravity.
“I have done tons of exercise classes and none of them can rival Sarah Jane’s Krank and Spin classes. It is the ultimate workout and she is the ultimate motivator. One class is never the same, and there is always great music playing , so you never get bored. If you are looking for a challenge and are ready to take your fitness to the next level, all while having fun, I can’t recommend Krank enough!”–Liza Canale
“KRANK is a quick, intense, full body workout in under an hour. What’s nice is that you are pushed, yet [you go] at your own pace. KRANK is not like any other gym and definitely worth every trip!”–Tyler Charlton
Leann Fray and Josh Rogers worked together for years prior to opening up Results Fitness. Located near the corner of 16th and Wedgewood on Music Row, I was initially worried that it would be difficult for me to get there. My fears were put to rest after several classes proved easy access and plentiful parking. Results is totally different from anything you’ve experienced, down to the physical building itself.
Results Fitness is located in a 1920’s Tudor house that, though renovated into a workout facility, still very much mirrors a traditional home with all major walls and age details in place. This atmosphere instantly creates a comfortable and friendly setting.
Results is able to offer plenty of space, but all broken down into rooms that include a personal training facility, spin studio, group fitness studio, on-site massage therapy facility, BarreAmped Studio, and personal consultation area.
I have tried the signature Ultimate Results several times. Each class is limited to just 10 people and is intense, in a good way. The Ultimate class is structured in intervals to achieve a burn of up to 900 calories in one hour. It includes rotations on the treadmill and the row machine, and strength training with TRX, kettle bells, weighted bars, gravity and more. The class has you moving around quickly so you are never bored. Because each person is working toward a time goal, everyone is able to get an individualized workout. So, while one person may be sprinting, the next may be walking at a fast pace. The Circuit Class on Saturday mornings – with a 7:45 start time that is solidly respectful of a Saturday AM sleep-in – is similar to the Ultimate Class. Both play loud music perfectly timed to help you pick up your pace and get the most out of your workout. The Lunch Express classes are a little shorter- just 45 minutes to get you out the door!
Spin classes are limited to 10 people and are 50 minutes in length. The bikes, by Keiser, are equipped with computers that take the guess work out of cycling and assure an efficient ride. A continuous readout shows your cadence, distance traveled, and heart rate. The upstairs has a BarreAmped Studio – a barre class – for a class size of just 9 people.
And, as if there couldn’t be any more, there is. Results has partnered with Kalamatas to offer healthy meals and drinks at the studio, portioned out with all the nutrition facts.
With bootcamps, marathon training, personal training, group classes, massages and pre-portioned healthy meals, Results offers something for everyone.
