There’s nothing more invigorating than fall’s crisp, cool air! Fall is my personal favorite season in so many ways, but especially for the fashion. Cozy sweaters, tailored blazers, and, of course, boots top my list of favorite seasonal trends. From ankle booties and over-the-knee styles to riding boots and block-heel tall boots, the list of fashionable fall footwear goes on and on.

Each season when I meet with my Style Coaching clients, we dive into their fall wardrobes and assess what they have and what they need for the new season ahead. Boots always come up as a hot topic given that each year boot styles come in and out of fashion.

This season there are definitely some key boot styles to invest in or to pull out of the back of your closet. And there are, of course, a few boots to retire too. You may have noticed that in the past few years booties have taken center stage, especially when worn with skinny jeans. And while the skinny jean and bootie look is not going away, we are seeing an influx of tall boots making a huge comeback!

One of fall’s top trends is what I call “Uptown ’70s Chic,” and this look is completed by a tall boot. This aesthetic is specific though. It requires a block-heel knee-high or over-the-knee boot paired with an a-line skirt or dress, perhaps a classic tailored blazer (bonus points for plaid) and silk scarf. We’re seeing these garments in gorgeous autumnal tones ranging from pumpkin and rust to chocolate brown and burgundy, and the tall boots are available in just as many rich and beautiful colors.

If this trend sounds a little bit too much for you, don’t worry! There are countless ways to wear this style this fall! My favorite way to wear it is paired with dresses. Whether for work, a night out with loved ones, or even just a nicer casual outing, the tall boot and dress combination is tres chic for all ages. The best part about this pairing is the dress can be any length. Pair your tall boots with midi dresses, knee-length dresses or even styles that cut right above the knee for a fresh and current look. You can also wear a pair of opaque tights with the boots if needed depending on the weather and the length of your dress.

But, there is one key trick to nailing the style. We are veering away from the equestrian style flat tall boot and moving towards a block heel that creates a lovely and elongated look. The height of the heel is your choice and often depends on the occasion. You can select a boot with a heel height of 2 inches for an easy day-to-night appeal, or you could try out a 3-inch heel height that is fabulous for an evening out. Pick the heel height that feels most comfortable, versatile and appropriate for you.

Now that you know the right and on-trend way to wear the boots of the season, it’s time for the weather to cool off and for you to have fun wearing this versatile tall boot! Remember to think about what color and heel height would best serve you, as well as how you might enjoy wearing them. Don’t hesitate to experiment and try wearing this boot in a few different ways to see what feels best to you. Remember that when a new trend is introduced, it can take a little time for our eye to get used to it. But now that you know the right way to rock this boot, you are ready to walk through fall in style and with confidence!
