An area that is characterized by its options for fashion and home decor, Green Hills is often overlooked as a go-to spot for local dining. Yes, it is home to ever-popular chains, such as Chipotle, Zoe’s Kitchen and California Pizza Kitchen. But it also offers locally run and locally sourced restaurants that are worthy of a visit. Believe it or not, there are 20 locally owned restaurants in the area. There’s no need to spend hours deciphering The Cheesecake Factory’s novel-length menu or waiting in the McDonald’s drive-thru line. Support these local businesses instead. If you are looking for fresh offerings for lunch and dinner, Kalamata’s should land at the top of your must-go list. The Mediterranean fare is sourced from traditional recipes resulting in authentic flavors and healthy alternatives. On the menu, you will find Greek salads and fattoush, pita sandwiches, housemade falafel and gyro plates. Round out the meal with a serving of pistachio baklava.

If you haven’t been lured in by the glowing neon lights of Fox’s Donut Den, you are missing out on one of the sweetest spots in Nashville. Cupcakes with a side of macarons may not be a well-rounded meal, and The Painted Cupcake is not necessarily a restaurant by definition. But their bright, welcoming shop is a must-visit in Green Hills. Located on Glen Echo Road, The Painted Cupcake makes cupcakes, French macarons, cookies, cakes and pies daily. It is a perfect destination after you enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at another local spot in the area — although, really, it is a destination all its own.

Goozy Dessert Bar & Cafe asserts our belief that dessert should be the star of the show. Yes, you will find delicious salads, soups, cheese and charcuterie, and artisan grilled-cheese sandwiches (such as an artichoke melt, brie and pear, and a pimento cheese melt) on the menu. But more importantly, you will discover cakes, specialty desserts, skillet cookies, gelato, and sorbets and sundaes. If you are looking for something with a kick, try their selection of boozy shakes/floats or order from their list of cocktails, spirits, beer and wine.

Green Hills Grille made its grand return after seven years with closed doors. The original Green Hills Grille held court in the area’s dining scene for 18 years before shutting its doors. Steven Smithing, previous employee and new owner of the restaurant, brought back this local favorite last year. The interior holds similarities to the original joint and many of the favorite dishes have reappeared on the menu. Stop in for crab cakes, artichoke dip, shrimp and grits, a selection of salads and sandwiches, and entrees with flavors borrowed from Mexico, the South, Asia and Italy.

Greek restaurants are sporadically placed across the city and we are glad to hear that another one popped up in Green Hills. Hommas, falafel, grape leaves, baba ghanoush and gyros are served at an approachable price point at Greek Cafe Grill, and we hear the staff is extremely friendly.
