Imagine a store where you can grab a gallon of milk and some homemade rosemary focaccia, or a box of detergent and a ready-to-pop-into-the-oven pan of pork chops with baby portabella mushrooms. Want some locally sourced artisan foods and a box of cereal? You can finally have your groceries and your gourmet too at Grassland Foodland.
Behind the small-town facade of Grassland Foodland grocery is a gourmet take-out gold mine: locally sourced produce and artisan foods. Homemade caramel cake, Southern-style casseroles, artisan gelato, Benton’s bacon and more all share space with everyday, run-of-the-mill groceries.
What the store lacks in square feet, it more than makes up for in selection and customer service. The traditional grocery is managed by store owner Al Carmen, who carries the day-to-day grocery essentials as well as seasonal produce from local farmers. The gourmet market and deli space is curated by Daisy King, author, former restaurateur and one of Nashville’s earliest food celebrities. Both are staunch advocates of supporting local farmers, food vendors and small businesses.
King leases space from Carmen, where she runs a take-out and catering business, Miss Daisy’s Kitchen. She fills the deli area with homemade entrées, soups, salads and desserts as well as Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. King also stocks Benton’s bacon, locally made products such as Bravo Gelato, and other gourmet food products.
There is a busy kitchen inside the store where Miss Daisy and her staff prepare a variety of take-out meals such as chicken divan, spinach lasagna and macaroni and cheese as well as operate the catering services. The author of eight cookbooks, King uses recipes that have been in her repertoire for years, many served at her beloved former restaurant Miss Daisy’s Tea Room.
King and her staff prepare all of the soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees from scratch, and the breads, rolls and desserts are made in-house or arrive each morning from local artisan bakers.
Many of the food options have a decidedly Southern spin, the sort of comfort food that your grandmother served on Sundays. But instead of poaching the chicken, stirring up a white sauce and assembling a casserole, you can serve the same goodness for your next family meal by stopping into Grassland Foodland. And if you want everyone to think you’re Superwoman (you are, by the way), you can bring your own casserole dishes and platters, and the staff will fill them with your favorites.
Having a cocktail party on the fly? The store is stocked with upscale food items to help pull off a party too with local lines like the Nashville Jams Company and Southern City Flavors, imported cheeses, and artisan breads and crackers.
To top off the dizzying array of grocery goodness and local produce, the store offers delivery on Wednesdays and Fridays.
