Summer is fabulous because the days are longer, the flowers are blooming, the fireflies amaze me and I get to see extended family. Summer, through my kids’ eyes, is fun to observe, but where my own sanity is concerned, it’s not so great. By the end of May I feel flattened like a Mack truck ran over me, and the new routine of summer always leaves me needing moments to recharge. The challenge, though, is finding a place to go to unwind that doesn’t require lots of complicated travel logistics. Happily, I’ve stumbled upon just the thing that is perfect either on your own, with your spouse or with friends, and you don’t have to travel far at all to get there.

Storybook Cottage: Hansel and Gretyl could’ve lived here, really. And they would’ve loved the outdoor shower.
“Storybook Cottage is just as you would imagine … charming and dreamy, the perfect place to get away from your fast-paced world to find the things that matter most. From the painted poplar wood floors and the cathedral ceiling, to the sleeping loft, outdoor shower and stacked stone wall, this cottage is one of a kind and is perfect for a romantic getaway, small families, weekend with friends or as an artist/writers retreat. Storybook Cottage is also horse friendly.

Jefferson House: A beautifully restored historic home, just walking distance to Main Street. This one belongs in a magazine. c.1900
“Jefferson House is located two and a half blocks from ‘Main Street’ in Historic Franklin twenty miles south of Nashville. Franklin has not only been named the number one small town in Tennessee, but also made Southern Living’s ‘Best Small Town’ top ten list. Experience the community pride and southern hospitality and enjoy the historic attractions, upscale shopping, live entertainment and great places to eat … all within walking distance.” — Shelter + Roost
Brigadoon: You cannot pay to sleep any closer to the heart of Leiper’s Fork Village. Imagine if Ralph Lauren had a yard sale and you’ll capture something of the essence of this dreamy place.
“Brigadoon is beautiful. It is a quirky, post Civil War home that has succumbed to a slight British invasion. Two distinct living rooms and sun/dining room combination give the home its identity. A queen bedroom on the main level offers a traditional sleeping experience; upstairs a queen bedroom suite has a loft feel to it. Single bed, daybed and optional inflatable queen bed will allow for additional places to rest the head. The kitchen, aka ‘the coop,’ has enough utensils to cook if you so desire. You can also wash up in a wonderful walk-in shower or soaker tub.” — Shelter + Roost
Leiper’s Fork Inn: Two historic homes, rescued, moved, and restored were combined to create this charming property. This property is rented to one family/group at a time, not by individual rooms. Perfect for weddings and events.
“The Inn is located in Leiper’s Fork Village and is within walking distance to art galleries, antique stores, boutiques, a rare book store and a handful of restaurants. Sit and relax in front of one of the homes three fireplaces, or cook a family meal in the gourmet kitchen complete with granite counter tops and Bosch stainless steel appliances. Two master suites include screened-in porches which overlook the quaint village of Leiper’s Fork, the living room provides a perfect gathering spot for evening conversations, games and puzzles, while the formal dining room becomes the perfect setting for family dinners.
