An innocent question asked by a friend on Memorial Day 2014 confirmed to Susan Dyke that she needed to open a home/lifestyle store here in Nashville. You see, her friend Anne was holding a beautiful glass and asked, “Where would I find a glass like this in Nashville?” Susan, who was the manager at A Mano, in Georgetown, before moving to Nashville, felt that pang again … the one that she had been fighting for quite a while to open a similar store here. That question sealed the deal. Her husband said, “Just do it. I’m tired of hearing about it!” The next day, Susan called her good friend Laura Chadwick, who is the buyer for the shops at The Gasparilla Inn in Boca Grande, FL, and Laura said she was in as a partner. And on November 17, 2014, just five months later, Epergne opened on Highway 100, near the 100/70 split.
Susan and Laura purposefully looked for retail space outside the Green Hills area. This meant cheaper rent and less traffic. The space they found feels like a house, with separate rooms that lead the way from one beautiful space to the next. You can find everything from a $30 baby gift or a $15 hostess gift to a $100 pair of earrings or a $500 wedding present. The store is stocked to be one you can pop in and out of each week for different needs.
This is the South, so no worries about monogramming whatever your heart desires. They sell brands through which monogramming can be done, and have the ability to monogram locally, as well. Of note is the Julian Mejia line of beautiful dinner and cocktail napkins, as well as place mats. With so many different monogramming options, it’s truly a custom experience and product.
When asked for a few things that have been bestsellers but weren’t necessarily pegged to do so well, Susan answers that the shagreen clutches by Vivo sell very well, even at $550. They are just so perfect with any outfit from black-tie to date night to luncheon. And the cashmere toppers, especially with the cooler weather we’ve had this spring, have flown out the door. The Artel glassware, another pricier item, has sold remarkably well. (If you go in, see the line and hold a glass, you’ll understand why. They are showstoppers!) The jewelry has also sold very well. Susan attributes that to Laura’s great job at finding price points that women feel they can buy without breaking the bank.
I asked Susan about opening up a home/lifestyle store in Nashville when others already exist, and also what her store does differently. “When I moved back to Nashville seven years ago,” she responded, “it really was such an exciting time. The city had grown so much, and even now, the restaurant scene continues to explode. Expanding the options for retail shopping meets this same need, as well. You don’t want just a few great restaurants; you want many to choose from, and that helps the city as a whole. There were great stores here already, but opening Epergne allows us to expand the options for this vibrant city.”
A few local artisans to whom Susan and Laura want to give a shoutout for their great work in helping them open the store include: Kipp Krusa, a designer/builder/craftsman, who constructed their amazing built-ins (he handles commercial and residential projects); Robin Campbell, who provided beautiful faux finishes to some of the furniture, and Allison Harris, who created the Epergne logo and packaging.
Epergne has a goal to have at least one specialty trunk show every six weeks or so. Next week, you can visit for the Pomegranate apparel trunk show. In May, Sissy Yates jewelry will grace the store. And they already have Kim Seybert lined up for a holiday show in the fall.
In addition, they have an active wedding registry!
Check out Epergne at 6592 Hwy. 100, Ste. 100, Nashville. The store is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m to 6 p.m.
