East Nashville is generally referred to as a neighborhood in and of itself, but in actuality, East Nashville is home to many pocket neighborhoods. Charming homes, friendly neighbors and delicious eateries have enthralled numerous locals and visitors. The appeal of the east side has only increased, and we must give thanks to the perpetually popular restaurants, new and old, that are found on that side of the river. The food scene is not evolving; it has evolved. A deluge of restaurants and watering holes (nearly 100!) occupy the streets of East Nashville and offer everything from soul food to sushi. The charm of locally owned spots located just steps away from picturesque residential streets is today’s reason for exploring the many neighborhoods of East Nashville.

The Best East Nashville Restaurants

Cleveland Park/McFerrin Park

Cleveland Park/McFerrin Park

West of Ellington Parkway, Cleveland Park and McFerrin Park have gotten two new spots in the past few months. Folk, a pizza-concept by Rolf & Daughters chef and owner Philip Krajeck, and Wilburn Street Tavern, a bar and eatery by Mas Tacos Por Favor owner Teresa Mason, opened in April on McFerrin Park’s Wilburn Street. Folk has garnered early fame for their pizza, but you’d be unwise to overlook the other items on the menu. With sections dedicated to snacks, seafood and meat, vegetables and big plates, this is more than your average pizza place. To the north of McFerrin Park, Cleveland Park has a host of neighborhood eateries, including House of Hickory BBQ (for wholesale and catering), Saucy Baby 615Madeline Pizza & PastaThe Silli Potato and Lil Cee’s.

Eastwood

Eastwood

Eastwood and Greenwood are two popular East Nashville neighborhoods split by Gallatin. In Eastwood, you can find everything from casual spots, such as Tower Market and Deli and The Nashville Biscuit House, to upscale eateries, including Peninsula, which joined the neighborhood in the final months in 2017 and introduced Nashville to a creative take on cuisine from the Iberian Peninsula. Nomzilla relocated to Eastwood from Edgehill Village, Tower Market and Deli opened in 2015, and Pearl Diver officially opens this weekend to join neighborhood staples including the aforementioned Nashville Biscuit House and Pepperfire Hot Chicken. On the edge of Eastwood, Cafe RozeSouthern Grist Brewing Co.Fran’s East Side and Vinyl Tap sit on Porter Road, and each has something different to offer. Cafe Roze serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with menus featuring fresh and simple dishes. Southern Grist is a local brewery founded in 2007 with taprooms in the Nations, as well as the East Side. Fran’s East Side is a dive bar favored by those who enjoy cheap beer and karaoke. Vinyl Tap is a music lovers’ spot that sells both beer and vinyl records.

Greenwood

Greenwood

Greenwood is most well-known for its craftsman bungalows and Victorian-style cottages, not to mention its ever-crowded eateries, Mas Tacos Por Favor and The Pharmacy Burger Parlor & Beer Garden. Favored by locals and tourists, these restaurants are likely to have a line, but the wait is worth it. Mas Tacos serves authentic tacos at an approachable price point, while The Pharmacy has burgers with just about any topping you could imagine. Lyra recently replaced Holland House and is earning their spot in the neighborhood thanks to thoughtful Middle Eastern cuisine.

Five Points

Five Points

Barely a neighborhood and more of an intersection, Five Points is packed with character. Five Points is home to some of the top eateries in town. Nearly 20 years ago, Margot McCormack opened the doors to her namesake restaurant and paved the way for East Nashville restaurateurs who would come behind her. Margot has become a true staple, not just in East Nashville but in the city’s overall foodscape. Five years after the opening of Margot, she opened Marché Artisan Foods, which is a casual eatery best known for its brunch and European vibes. Over the years, many a restaurant has opened to diversify the offerings in Five Points. For pizza, try Five Points Pizza or PizzeReal. If you are looking for a drink and a snack, head to Tenn16Beyond the Edge3 CrowRed Door Saloon, Drifters or Rosemary & Beauty Queen. For a show and cheap beer, visit The 5 Spot. For affordable eats, stop by I Dream of Weenie, Five Points Tacos or Batter’d & Fried. For something sweet, try The Soda Parlor and Pied Piper. Game lovers will enjoy a visit to Bongo East/Game Point Café. And for an elevated experience in an unbeatable setting, The Treehouse will delight.

Historic Edgefield

Historic Edgefield

Historic Edgefield has some of the city’s best architecture, including antebellum mansions and Victorian homes, and of course, some of the city’s best restaurants. A trip down Main Street will lead you to The Mainstay, a casual, neighborhood spot; Bolton’s for spicy chicken and fish; GReKo Greek Street Food, which promises authentic Greek fare; Nashville Urban Winery for their weekday happy hour that features deals on wines; Butcher & Bee for fresh seasonal items to share; Smith & Lentz, a local brewery and taproom; Edley’s Bar-B-Que and Koi Thai & Sushi before reaching Five Points Cocina MexicanaNoble’s Kitchen & Beer Hall and Burger Up East, which border Five Points. A recent drive through the neighborhood left us curious about BoomBozz, a craft pizza and taphouse on the corner of 10th and Russell Street that looks to be nearing completion.

Woodland Street is home to another host of restaurants and bars, including The Turnip Truck (okay, not technically a restaurant), Yeast NashvilleThe Crying WolfThe Basement East (okay, more of an event venue) and Edgefield. Between Woodland Street and Main Street, you will find Attaboy, a speakeasy-style bar tucked in an alley.

Lockeland Springs

Lockeland Springs

One of the east side’s largest neighborhoods, Lockeland Springs extends from Gallatin Avenue to Shelby Golf Course and from Eastland Avenue to Shelby Avenue. On the stretch of Gallatin Avenue that runs between Five Points and Eastwood, Calypso CafeBar 308Barista Parlor and POP To-Go and Dino’s serve everything from salads and cocktails to coffee and ramen on the run.

On Eastland Avenue, between 17th Street and North 20th Street, eight eateries hold court. Two Ten Jack marries local flavors of Japanese techniques, which result in some of the most delicious food we’ve ever had. Five Daughters Bakery has the sweetest folks on the block, and those in the neighborhood were thrilled they no longer had to travel across town for donuts. The Wild Cow and nearby neighbor Graze serve vegetarian dishes that delight. Ugly Mugs Coffee & Tea is a neighborhood coffee shop that has been in operation since 2008. Jeni’s Ice Cream sits on the corner of the development and across the street, Rosepepper Cantina draws people in with their hilarious signs and tasty margaritas. Eastland Cafe and Pomodoro East bring elevated American and Italian dishes, respectively, to the neighborhood.

In the center of Lockeland Springs, along Woodland Street, you’ll find Lockeland TableItalia Pizza and PastaUrban Cowboy’s Public House and The Lipstick Lounge, and on North 16th Street, you’ll find Sweet 16th Bakery. Lockeland Table has fostered a community of regulars who have been fans since their opening more than six years ago. The favored time to go is Community Hour when a small menu (including options for kids) is available, and proceeds benefit Lockeland Design Center PTO.

Riverside Village

Riverside Village

This northern East Nashville neighborhood (technically part of Inglewood) only covering a few blocks is small but mighty. Strolling the streets, you will stumble upon street art and local businesses. A recent visit led us to discover that Bailey & Cato, a family restaurant that closed in 2016, has relocated to Madison — so fear not, you can still get your meat n’ three fix! Now, six restaurants call the neighborhood home: Babo Korean Bar, Mitchell Delicatessen, Village Pub & Beer Garden, Dose CoffeeRudie’s Seafood and Sausage and Castrillo’s Pizza. Each of these six restaurants offers a neighborhood feel, which is second only to the delicious food they serve. Fort Louise is open for brunch and dinner with something for everyone in the family. Mitchell Deli first opened in 2008 and has been considered the best sandwich place in Nashville by many. Village Pub & Beer Garden is just that — a cozy place to enjoy a stuffed pretzel sandwich and a cold beer. Dose Coffee is approaching their second anniversary on the east side, while Rudie’s Seafood and Sausage is approaching its fourth. Castrillo’s Pizza has been serving pizza on the east side since 2001, and this neighborhood joint opened a second location in West Nashville in 2012.

Fatherland District

Fatherland District

Technically, the Fatherland District encompasses the Shoppes on Fatherland, 1100 Fatherland and the new Fatherland Corner, but for the purposes of this article, we are extending the neighborhood to include the spot where South 17th Street meets Fatherland Street — and where you will find The Post East, an all-day eatery that specializes in gluten-free, vegan and organic fare, and Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co.

The Shoppes on Fatherland is a cluster of small businesses and perhaps the most well-known spot in the Fatherland District. In addition to a handful of shops (including Longevity Boutique, Project 615 and Follow me Cheese), you’ll find Far East Nashville Vietnamese, a restaurant with Vietnamese dishes such as spring rolls, bánh mì and pho. The neighboring 1100 Fatherland is home to Maru Sushi & Grill and Local Taco. Also on Fatherland, Sky Blue Cafe is making our list of Fatherland District neighborhood spots and on our list of favorite restaurants. A place that serves breakfast all day is a place we love!

East Hill

East Hill

Truthfully, we weren’t sure whether to call this section East Hill or Keeling Avenue — but we decided to go with East Hill. You may recognize spots in this neighborhood that have been around for some time, including The Cobra and Las Maracas. Just north of those spots, you will find a cluster of eateries and bars. Nicoletto’s Italian Kitchen handcrafts small batch pasta, and at their Italian Kitchen on Gallatin Avenue, you can enjoy this fresh pasta with your choice of sauce and proteins or veggies. The menu also includes sandwiches and salads, plus a selection of items served until midnight. Before (or after) your late-night snack, hit one of the area’s watering holes: WaldenMickey’s Tavern and The Fox Bar & Cocktail Club. The Fox Bar & Cocktail Club opened in November of 2017, and Walden opened in spring of this year, both with hopes of being a neighborhood spot with tasty cocktails. Mickey’s Tavern is another watering hole with more of a dive-bar feel than its neighbors. Mickey’s opened in 2013 and has continued to be a hot spot ever since.

We took creative liberty with a few neighborhood lines to give the best understanding of where everything sits in East Nashville. Did we overlook something or put something in the wrong spot? Let us know (and forgive us!). Also, business hours are subject to change, so please double check the restaurant is open before you head that way!
