We were fascinated by an article in Nashville Lifestyles last year about Melissa Brown and her Couture Coffeebags company. Having an artistic eye, Melissa had noticed a burlap bag trimmed in toile fabric at a football game several years ago. She loved the contrast and tried to find something similar, with an upscale edge. When her search left her empty handed, she decided to make her own line, and thus Couture Coffeebags was born.
Found in stores throughout Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio and California, these bags are definitely striking a chord. Made in the USA, these bags use recycled products whenever possible. We adore their mission:
We design each product to reflect the bag’s utilitarian and artistic style, pairing it with contrasting textiles. Our process allows us to create one-of-a-kind pieces that have a story to tell. We always try and use re-purposed materials and take careful consideration to the quality of our products and the craftsmanship that goes into making them. All our processes are local and our studio is located just down the road from the state capitol of Tennessee in Nashville.
I caught up with Melissa just yesterday for an update on where her company is headed, “Over the past 6 months, the studio has moved to a factory in Nashville which has allowed a higher quality, more stream-lined product. We now offer five fabrics per season, while ensuring that each bag is still one-of-a-kind. This has allowed us to grow on a larger scale, while allowing me to concentrate more on the creative side (check out our new clutch!) and marketing end of the business. We are excited to be expanding soon into Birmingham and Memphis. Pillows have been added with more home decor products arriving in the very near future.”
“Our focus is green and local. Most of the coffee bags come from Knoxville. We are looking into incorporating glass into a home decor product that is made at a small glass factory in Ohio. We use recycled leather hide straight from another factory.
Also, when I started this business I knew it needed to benefit women. The irony is that women are the ones continually helping me! The networking ability of women to spread the word about these products and open doors for Couture Coffeebags is amazing!”
In Nashville, Couture Coffeebags can be found at the Hermitage Hotel. In Franklin, they are found at The Good Cup. With bags less than $60, these can make everyone feel good!
