While Halloween and Thanksgiving are the big draws each fall, seasonal design should go beyond pumpkins and gourds. In fact, we prefer that the pumpkins fall second in line to inviting porches and patios, complete with fireplaces or fire pits. With the cool weather rolling in, we picked our favorite spaces that invite guests to sit down, relax and enjoy the autumn weather.
This rustic-inspired, indoor porch creates an elegant warmth by allowing the fireplace to act as the focal point of the room. Perfect for fall gatherings, this space welcomes visitors in for some down-home comfort. Designed by Rhea Crenshaw Interiors, a Memphis based design firm, this space evokes pleasant images of daydreaming by the fire or snuggling up with your favorite read.
Imagine dining with friends and family in front of the blazing fireplace that commands the attention of this indoor/outdoor space. Chad James Group, founded in 2011, services the Nashville area with lifestyle designs that inspire comfortable living. The neutral colors create warmth and light, and the windows allow nature’s fall colors to act as the perfect backdrop.
Bright and Airy
As part of a renovation job in Mountain Brook, Ala., Christopher Architecture & Interiors designed this indoor/outdoor living space with a twist. The stark white color of the fireplace and surrounding walls is framed by the darker woods that accent the room. The high ceilings and contrasting colors draw the eye upwards to create an open, inviting area, and the glow from the lit fireplace introduces a sense of warmth to this screened-in porch.
With two cozy couches surrounding the fireplace, this room is designed for relaxation. Dreamy views of the landscape create a peaceful ambience that pairs perfectly with the warmth of the fire. We love the addition of the chandelier, which adds a warm glow on a brisk fall day. Gardner Architects, which has been known to tackle any project large or small, are to thank for this stunning enclosed space complete with the comfort of a roaring fire.
Bring the Outdoors In
This bright, open porch makes creative use of the natural light that floods in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. With natural and soft colors, this porch can act as a year-round living space, but the fireplace against the back wall makes it extra special for fall. Ridley Wills, owner of The Wills Company, is adept at creating exceptional spaces with a timeless feel.
Relaxing by the Water
Tucked behind the pool area, this outdoor living space provides an escape during the South’s chilly months. The unique structure accents the space and encourages residents to snuggle next to the fire. Senior project manager, Jason Gabbard of Page|Duke Landscape Architecture, believes that an area with a fireplace as a focal point calls for the furniture and accessories to be designed just like an interior room, which brings the comfort of the indoors to any area.
In contrast to the indoor living room by Rhea Crenshaw Interior Designs, this outdoor space uses a fire pit to add warmth. With areas for dining, lounging and embracing the outdoor wonders of fall, this porch is an entertainer’s dream. By adding a source of heat, you can maximize your outdoor living areas even as the air turns crisp.
Perfect Porch Setting
Simplistic furniture and the rough stone fireplace blend together to create a functional setting that is surrounded by picturesque fall colors. The fireplace grabs attention by creating an inviting atmosphere for casual entertaining. With an affinity towards Southern artisans and midcentury modern aesthetics, Steve and Jill McKenzie work together to incorporate easy and comfortable pieces into their designs.
Father Nature Landscape makes it their mission to redefine the way you experience outdoor living, a guiding principle made clear in this stacked stone fireplace. The structure emphasizes the natural elements of the space, and the simplicity of the materials adds character without overwhelming the landscape. The burning of the natural wood creates an environment ideal for chatting, reading, dining or entertaining.
The Lee W. Robinson Company approaches design as a reflection of each client’s lifestyle. While incorporating elements of bluegrass and Southern hospitality, they create spaces, such as this outdoor living area, that provide a traditional and elegant feel. The freestanding stone fireplace exudes minimalist elegance that is warmed by the natural wood of the surrounding furniture. Although in an open-air setting, the heat from the fireplace blankets guests in warmth during outdoor gatherings.
Embrace the cooler fall weather, and cuddle up next to a fire, be it indoors or out.
