Sweaters and booties are for winter, while pastels, florals and bold colors are for spring. But what about the trends that you can carry from season to season? We talked to the experts at Vignette to find out what key trends are hot right now and that have staying power well into spring. Plus, they shared some pointers for how to style them in both seasons.

“Pieces that transition well from winter to spring usually do so by adding to or taking away. Plaids and prints are seasonally versatile when you stick to this process,” says Vignette owner Lisa McHugh. “In cool weather, layers are key. The simple addition of a blazer, sweater or scarf can take an outfit to winter ready with little effort but a lot of flair. Likewise, for spring, trading the sweaters and scarves for a blouse with an open neckline is all it takes to lighten things up for warmer days.”

Take a look at how to wear a leopard print skirt in cold and warm weather; try plaid pants for your holiday party this winter or drinks with friends next spring; and incorporate chunky jewelry into any look you wear, no matter the season. These three trends are ones you don’t want to miss.

TREND: Animal Prints

Animal print is the most popular trend of the season, and it will still be going strong come spring. This leopard print skirt is a perfect way to wear the look — especially for those who are not quite bold enough to wear a leopard print faux fur jacket. The print adds a touch of glam to any outfit, and it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. We have been told that animal print is a neutral, so even if you aren’t one for pattern or color, this is an easy way to add interest to your outfit.

This winter, pair your leopard print skirt with dark colors and a cozy sweater. Not only will you be seasonally appropriate, but you will also be warm. We opted for neutral tops, but a colorful top would make for an eye-catching look to love. When the weather warms up, trade in your heavy layers for a light, versatile top. Take this trend from season to season and day to night by simply swapping your shirt and jewelry. Plus, animal print never goes out of style, so you can re-wear this trend next year, too.

TREND: Plaid

Plaid is another pattern that never goes out of style, and this season, it seems to be particularly popular, showing up in patterns ranging from bold and colorful to more subdued and neutral. Plaids, which grew in popularity this fall and continue to reign supreme, are similar to animal print in that they can be styled for casual events or dressier affairs.

Today, we take a look at plaid pants and show how they can be worn in different temperatures and settings. The first look, ideal for a winter holiday gathering, is rich in texture. A velvet top paired with the pants and topped with a blazer and eye-catching necklace creates a look that will impress. In styling the pants for spring, a white button-down creates a polished look. Finished with a chunky necklace, it can be work to work or out for drinks with the gals. Even a simple white t-shirt can be paired with the pants for a casual look.

Trend: Chunky Jewelry

Accessories are the easiest trend to try, and this year, the trend to try is chunky jewelry. “The best jewelry pieces to fit all seasons are chunkier, statement-type pieces. Big bold earrings look good with less and more – meaning the more layered pieces of winter or the pared-down wardrobe of spring,” Lisa shares. “Delicate and layered necklaces look better with spring and summer styles, so if you want a look that goes well in multiple seasons, stick with a bolder look that doesn’t get lost in winter apparel pieces but looks just as good with the lighter fabrics of spring.

Earrings and necklaces are bigger than before, and thanks to their size, they can make a bold statement. Look at these earrings, available in three bold shapes and colors that will add a pop to any outfit. Although they’re big, they won’t weigh you down. A bold necklace is just as intriguing, and these necklaces, made of leather, are some of the most interesting we have seen in some time. Plus, the neutral colors can work any time of the year.
