Across the South, under the summer sun, pink-cheeked epicures peruse colorful farmers’ market produce and artisan goods. Exuberant music-lovers are awash in concert lights as they gaze at musicians rocking the stages of summer festivals. Water-loving Southerners splash in pools, lakes, swimming holes and oceans, and adventure seekers take new paths and experience new thrills across the world. It’s summer in the South, and no heat wave can quell our poolside passion, our farmers’ market fervor or our music-festival moxy!
From our roundup of top local events and happenings to updates on all of the new eateries in town, we are keeping you in the loop on all things local, so that you don’t miss a beat this summer. We’ve even got a list of the top activities for your summer bucket list (think inner-tubing down a lazy river or visiting a waterfall). Or maybe you’re planning your next getaway and are looking for fabulous destinations off the beaten path. We’ll be pounding the pavement and bringing you the best of Jupiter, Florida; Cinque Terre, Italy; Door County, Wisconsin, and more.
And if you are looking to kick up your heels in the AC for some quality couch-surfing escapism, check out our beautiful weddings — like an ocean-side Sea Island, Georgia, wedding under Spanish moss-laden trees. Or perhaps you’d like to focus on interiors with our roundup of creative spaces across the South, a before-and-after kitchen in Birmingham or a Memphis artist’s out-of-the-box home and to-die-for treehouse! If you’re wanting more swoon-worthy interiors, we’ve scoured Louisville and Birmingham to find the coolest office spaces in town!
For all of the fashion mavens, we have some exciting What to Wear photo shoots at the Memphis Zoo and the Birmingham Museum of Art, as well as our monthly fashion Q&A with style coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth. And, as always, we profile the fabulously intelligent, witty and wonderful women moving our cities forward in our FACES interviews. So, whether you’re a fashionista, a foodie, a traveler or a designer extraordinaire, there’s summer inspiration for every Southern soul!
Happy New Year!
It’s hard to believe that the holidays are over and 2017 is here! As the new year begins, it’s time to evaluate the year ahead, make new plans and take on new challenges.
This month, we’ll embrace the best of Memphis and help you fill up the pages of your new calendar, whether it’s digital or old-school paper, with 16 events and happenings around town. Some of our favorite Memphis foodies will dish on their favorite cheap eats in town, and we’ll explore our craft beer culture. We’ll be featuring athleisure in this month’s What to Wear, and introduce you to women making a difference in Memphis.
I wish you a wonderful 2017, filled with love, joy and adventure!
This month is all about celebration, and we’ve jumped right into the holiday season with some really fun content for you. If, like me, you leave your New Year’s Eve plan and outfit until the last minute, this month’s What to Wear feature is packed with gorgeous clothes that will look stunning, no matter your NYE plans. Need some gift inspiration? From hostess gifts to 50 FINDS priced $50 or less to over-the-top luxury, our holiday gift guides are filled with inspiration from stores around Memphis. We will learn more about Greg Baudoin, the incredibly talented – and busy! – interior designer who is taking his aesthetic to another field, publishing. And, we will hear from a handful of Memphis women about their morning routines in a story that is sure to make you feel 100% normal. In other words, you’re not the only one with a morning rush, a morning full of checklists, or a morning mantra to get you through each day.
I hope your holiday season is merry and bright, filled with the love and camaraderie of family and friends. I’ll see you in 2017!
Ready, set….GO. It’s November, and the holiday rush is officially here, no matter how much we try to make the spirit of Thanksgiving and the holiday season last all year long. What are you thankful for this year?
I’m trying to practice gratitude every day, and remember some of the very simple things for which I am grateful, including a healthy family and wonderful friends. There’s no greater gift than that, in my opinion. And I have so much more to be grateful for, as well. Here are just a few of those things:
First – all of us at SB Memphis are thankful for YOU, our readers. In October, we hit a milestone here when the number of our subscribers topped 10,000. (As of this writing, we’re at 11,334 subscribers!!) We’re just so thrilled that you have embraced us, and we cannot thank YOU enough!
Next, I’m thankful this presidential election is almost over, and let me be clear I say that with no particular candidate in mind. It’s been a doozy, to say the least, and I am ready for a return to civility on the airwaves and in all of our lives. Please remember to VOTE on November 8th! Every vote counts, and it’s a privilege to live in a democratic society – something else I am thankful for.
I’m thankful for my wonderful family, and never more than right now, as we begin to gather for the holidays. With kids on both coasts, I’m experiencing the empty nest for the first time, and this mama bird is a little sad. But I am so thankful for them and cannot wait to celebrate the holiday season with them!
And I’m thankful that we have such wonderful stories to tell in November. We’ll be highlighting the restaurants who can help make your Thanksgiving smoother with tasty takeout; you’ll meet some wonderful women who are committed to making Memphis a better place; you’ll hear about #GritGrindGive and how you can support Memphis charities on Giving Tuesday; and you’ll be treated to some scrumptious cocktail recipes featuring that most Southern of all liquors, bourbon.
I hope your November is full of love and thanksgiving. Thank you for being our reader!
It seems like just a week ago that I wrote the May edition of this letter; and now, in a blink, August is here!
We asked our college interns Lizzie Apple and Marilyn Jenkins to tackle FINDS this month, and on Tuesday you’ll see their great collection of must-haves for the dorm or college apartment. Foodie Perre Magness, back from some R&R in London, has a round-up of hidden-in-plain sight restaurants you’ll want to add to your ‘must-eat’ list, and later in the month, will share the latest in restaurant openings and announcements. Memphis is definitely in a restaurant renaissance! Cara Greenstein, who is picking up fans and followers across the South for her lifestyle blog Caramelized, will share her ideas for a late summer al fresco dinner. And keep your eye out for Luxe Loves, our over-the-top collection of to-dream-for finds around the city.
Last night I was out with some friends for dinner in the bar at Folk’s Folly, and it became clear that so many of us were in a transitional time. One friend’s daughter is marrying this fall, another, like me, will take her youngest to college in a few weeks – and then the nest will be empty. Others still were preparing to welcome kids back from camp, or head out on one last family vacation before school starts. You can feel the city’s energy starting to pick up again, now that the start of school looms and the summer fun winds down.
Whatever August holds for you and yours, enjoy the last days of summer!
Greetings from the StyleBlueprint Memphis satellite office in gorgeous Grand Haven, Michigan!
I’ve got a few more days left in my annual escape to this darling town, located where the Grand River meets Lake Michigan. Having grown up in the Midwest, coming to Michigan feels like coming home. And while I’m working most days while I’m here, the change of scenery brings a change of perspective, a refresh for the soul, and certainly cooler temperatures. Windows are open, humidity is low, and Lake Michigan is its usual stunning self.
I’m looking forward to coming back to Memphis recharged – and we’ve got an exciting month ahead! Be sure to check our daily Happenings, so you can keep up on all the events around town, including a handful of fabulous fireworks displays at which to celebrate the 4th of July.
We kick off Wedding Wednesdays this month, with the story of a couple who, separately, felt called to serve others, and both chose Memphis as the focus of that service. They met, fell in love, and married at the Brooks Museum on a chilly April day. Later this month, we’ll bring you a special What to Wear: The Mother of the Bride/Groom edition. We can’t wait to see what Lauren Turner finds as she hits local stores! Intern Marilyn Jenkins brings us some fabulous FINDS from the Memphis Farmers Market, and Intern Lizzie Apple will give us an update on the progress of all the work going on at Shelby Farms.
Enjoy you 4th of July celebrations!
And just like that, summer is here. Yay!
It’s just such a great month to be in Memphis, as the city collectively turns its attention to iconic events, including the FedEx St. Jude Classic and the Germantown Charity Horse Show; Live at the Garden kicks off this month with two performances, and the Levitt Shell free summer music series also kicks into high gear. If you’re wondering what to wear to all these outdoor events, we’ve got nine options that will help you to stay cool while looking stylish.
We also celebrate our fathers this month, and if you’re stuck for a gift, be sure to check out our June FINDS on the 7th. It’s packed with great ideas with which to spoil your dad, from a gorgeous watch to grilling cookbooks to rugged gear for travel.
We’re starting a new feature this month – Interior Designer Crush. In it, we will profile an interior designer, and get to know their design philosophy, find out from where they draw their inspiration, and also discover their current obsessions. This month’s Crush, Rachel Gray, says primary colors are one of her obsessions — be sure to check in on the 8th to learn more about Rachel.
Also this month, we’ll check in with the Memphis restaurant scene and see what’s in the works; we’ll have some advice for those of us who might be contemplating a break-up (with our hair color) and we’ll take you inside the Curb Market, the gourmet market in Midtown that’s all about locally-sourced food.
Finally, a shout out to the best dad on the planet – mine! Dad, you’ve always been such a rock, both for me and my kids. We’re so glad you’re here in Memphis, and we love you!
Have a great month!
May is time of beauty and festivity in Memphis, from our much-loved Memphis in May International Festival and all the fun it brings, to the warm days and cool evenings we can enjoy on patios all over town, before the heat of the summer sets in.
This month, we’ll be looking forward to May and beyond; we’ll have a round-up of our local farmer’s markets, our favorite patios for al fresco dining, and offer some advice on makeup tips and tricks for summer. We’ve got a number of great interior design stories to share, including a look inside a gorgeous New Orleans home that is the second home of a Memphis couple that Greg Baudoin of Ray & Baudoin designed, and we’ll talk to Sean Anderson about dark spaces.
I have a confession to make: Since I’ve had kids, I’ve always kind of dreaded May; between the end-of-school craziness of half-days, exams, parties and teacher gifts there’s also graduations and firs communions, weddings and sports championships….it’s just exhausting!
But for me, this May will be different. I’ll welcome all the folderol and cherish it, as my youngest graduates from high school on May 16. Every graduation gift bought, every school event attended, every moment in the run-up to graduation day will bring her one step closer to film school and California, and bring me closer to an empty nest. Together, we will transition to the next phase of our lives. Apart, we will find independence; her, for the first time, and me, as a middle-aged single woman. In a weird parallel way, we will undoubtedly share some of the same challenges (living on our own! dating!), triumphs (dating?) and introspection (why did I date him?).
I think I can speak for her when I say we are both looking forward to this new chapter in our lives. While I will miss her terribly, I cannot wait for her to find her voice, her path. I couldn’t be more proud of the lovely young woman she has become, and I’m so excited about her future.
May is a wonderful month to celebrate both endings, and the future. Congratulations to all of our Memphis graduates, whether they’re heading off to college or the real world, post-college! Go get ’em!

It’s fall in Memphis, y’all. Grit, grind and get outside to enjoy everybody’s favorite season in our amazing town.
Reflect on the memories of summer while there is still time to create a few more! This month, SB Memphis is holding onto the lighthearted mood of the passing season while looking forward to the energy of fall.
Summer is best represented by the comfortable combos we suggest in our What to Wear to local events this month, and, our boutique highlights celebrate some of Memphis’ new businesses such as HOUSE by Rhea Crenshaw in East Memphis and Bingham & Broad in the Broad Avenue Arts District.
Looking towards fall, we have identified the trends in this year’s spotlight and curated a list of nearby outdoor adventures to enjoy now and into the coming months. And because everyone struggles with the change of routine from summer to fall, one of our many dining features directs you to the best places for picking up local prepared foods for your kitchen.
Finally, have you entered to win any of our fun summer giveaway contests yet? We have had one each month, and in August, look for a final grand prize from Lansky 126 in honor of Elvis Week 2015! Welcome August 2015 …
