Hard to believe, but it’s time for the winter switch! The change in seasons means it’s time to pull those cool-weather clothes from the back of your closet and tweak your makeup color palette. But did you know that along with your cosmetics, you should change your skin care regimen to adjust to the cooler months?
To help prep your skin for the chill, we asked a few Memphis salons and spas to give us tips, as well as their top winter-ready products and salon treatments. Below, hear from the teams at Rachel’s Salon & Day Spa, Feathers Spa at The Peabody and De La Belle Wellness & Spa on how to save your skin from the harsh winter weather.
Rachel’s Salon & Day Spa
Massage therapist Mae Jensen, esthetician Sarah Briley and makeup artist and Rachel’s owner Paige Garland have three key tips to share for keeping your skin supple when the temperatures drop:
First, be sure to focus on moisture, especially around the eyes. Treatments like Rachel’s Salon & Day Spa’s 30-minute Revitalizing Eye Zone Treatment can reduce the appearance of under-eye dark circles and puffiness, and help energize, hydrate and moisturize the skin around the eyes through a combination of skin care products and acupressure techniques.
For results at home, try Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Energizing Eye eye crème ($35). This plant-based product helps reduce the appearance of under-eye circles, energizes the look of skin around the eyes and helps skin retain moisture by providing lasting hydration.
Second, winterize the rest of your body, not just your face! Rachel’s offers an Aveda Aroma Body Wrap that detoxifies, exfoliates and offers deep moisturizing for the skin. This seaweed body wrap treatment includes a dry exfoliation, seaweed body masque, scalp and face massage, and foot reflexology techniques.
Third, and finally, the team at Rachel’s reminds you to keep your lips moisturized. For this, they recommend Aveda Nourish-Mint ($16). Worn either alone or under lip color, this product aims to plump lips over time, smooth the appearance of fine lines and improve moisture using a blend of peppermint, vanilla and ginger essential oils.
Feathers Spa at The Peabody
Lead esthetician Katie Williams of Feathers Spa, located inside the Peabody Hotel, offers up four top tips for achieving great winter skin. First, pay attention to your skin’s environment protection barrier, also known as the lipid barrier. As you age, you produce fewer lipids, causing skin to become drier, duller and more wrinkle-prone. Winter weather makes these issues worse.
Second, let go of that need to feel squeaky clean, and cleanse without stripping your skin by using a cleanser with natural oils.
Third, exfoliate with caution. Try to find products that contain lactic acid versus other alpha-hydroxy acids (such as glycolic and salicylic acids), as lactic acid has hydrating properties.
Fourth, and finally, wear sunscreen! Your skin is still getting exposure to the sun’s rays in the winter. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Katie recommends a sun protector with zinc oxide.
Feathers Spa at The Peabody offers several winter skin care facials that can help, as well. The Luminous C and Sea facial helps firm and brighten skin, while improving skin damage, and the Myoxy Caviar is an opulent, antiaging facial that nourishes the skin with pure caviar, Asian pearl and phyto-extracts (Escutox).
De La Belle Wellness and Spa at The Shops of Chickasaw Oaks
Esthetician Robin Thoda, of De La Belle Wellness & Spa, recommends Image Skin Care’s THE MAX skin care line, which delivers pharmaceutical-grade ingredients to penetrate at the deepest level of skin for the maximum benefit. This line’s unique blend of plant-derived stem cell technology and nutripeptides help plump and protect your winter skin.
De La Belle also carries the OBAGI skin care line, which aims to help reverse the damaging effects of UVA/UVB rays and minimize sun damage and age spots. This prescription-based skin care line uses a six-step system involving ingredients like hydroquinone, a lightening agent, and Retin-A to slow down and reverse the skin’s aging process.
Chemical peels, like Image Perfection Lift or Obagi’s Blue Peel Radiance, are great during the winter months to help smooth fine lines/wrinkles, as well as lighten sun/age spots, Robin says. Each of these peels combines blends of salicylic acid to even skin tone, improve acne, lighten sun damage, promote cell turnover and strengthen existing stem cells. A series of four to six peels done every two to four weeks can offer dramatic, long-lasting results.
De La Belle also offers services with long-lasting results to lift and tighten skin, as well as lighten sun and vascular pigmentation with the Syneron/Candela Elos Plus laser system, a gold standard technology in aesthetic medicine.
Like Katie, Robin stresses the importance of wearing sunscreen in winter months. She recommends an SPF of 30 or higher, since the sun can damage skin even on cloudy and chilly days. To make it easy, try makeup with SPF built right in, such as the GLO MINERALS makeup line, which can be found at De La Belle and combines SPF, green tea and vitamins A,C and E to help protect and heal skin and act as an anti-inflammatory for chapped, sensitive skin. It’s also won’t clog pores and contains no perfumes or talc powder.
No matter which products, treatments or skin care regimens you use to protect your skin during the winter months, the message from these Memphis experts is clear: be proactive. Cool air and winter winds are tough on the skin, so pick products designed to moisturize, nurture and protect!
