While summer is traditionally wedding season, the truth of the matter is that every season is wedding season. If you’re a mother of the bride or groom, then you know that all eyes will not only be on the happy couple, but also on you — perhaps not to see your outfit but rather if the tears have started flowing. And if they have, well you should have an amazing outfit on to distract the gawkers.
We turned to the pros at Bella Bridesmaids to give us some insight on what the mother of the bride or groom (MotB/G) might expect when looking for that perfect outfit for the special occasion.
“Whenever a mother of the bride comes into our store, they normally have an idea of what they’re wanting,” says employee Kaitlyn White. “We like having options that provide for the needs that a mother has.” From price to color to style, many MotB/Gs walk into a store with a perfect dress in their head and it is the consultant’s role to help them take that idea and turn it into reality.
The mom of both the bride and the groom should chat with the bride about her vision of the day; some brides are very specific in how they envision their mom dressing. Considerations about color, length and style are all on the table. And while it may seem old-fashioned, traditionally the mother of the bride chooses her gown and color first, setting the tone for the mother of the groom.
Kaitlyn says that women looking for their mother of the bride dresses tend to want more coverage. For those with a summer or beach wedding, however, more coverage can equal a warmer gown. One way to work around this problem is to select looser, more breathable fabrics that offer coverage without restriction.
One final note for the MotB/G: Think about the logistics of the day. If your role is a more active one, be sure the dress you choose is one in which you can move easily. You don’t want to be losing sequins or beads, or worrying about tripping over a hem, if you’re having a more active than usual role in the celebration.
