By late-March, your skin may be feeling as dull and drab as the weather we’ve slogged through all winter. But we have glimpsed the sun, so it’s the perfect time to get your skin ready to face the new season.
From collagen-stimulating treatments to microcurrent facials to exfoliating polishes, Memphis spas and skin centers have what you need to help you put your game face on for spring.
“Collagen-stimulating treatments rev up a glowing, healthy skin after a winter’s chill,” says Mona Sappenfield, esthetician and CEO of Mona Esthetics. Combination skin treatments up to the task are microdermabrasion and Laser Genesis (so popular the spa sells them in packages); a weekly series of low-level professional peels to remove dull skin cells and allow more nutrients, including oxygen, to stimulate collagen; and Ulthera Skin Uplift, a deep focal ultrasound for lifting sagging skin.
“Hands down, the must-have spring treatment for skin is the microcurrent facial, named the top treatment to do in 2017 by NewBeauty magazine,” says Amber Thompson of Renew Wellness Spa. Microcurrent gently works facial muscles to lift and tone the face. “At Renew, our ElectroGlo Facial is a client favorite,” she says. “Using three different electrical currents, this rejuvenating facial peels, pumps and plumps for an instant glow. With regular use, this facial has been called the non-surgical facelift.”
Kate Gassaway, RN, MSN, APRN, BC, of Solutions Medical Center recommends ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Polish. “Round magnesium crystals exfoliate dead skin cells, increase epidermal turnover, polish off dead skin cells and create a cleaner, smoother, more even-toned complexion,” she says. “But the benefits go deeper than that. Vitamins A, C, C-Esters and E provide powerful antioxidant protection.” She also mentions ZO Daily Power Defense, a serum with anti-aging ingredients to repair damaged skin cells and protect against future damage.
The Hydra-Infusion Facial is the top treatment mentioned by Jeni Young, licensed medical esthetician at McDonald Murrmann Center for Skin, Laser & Healthy Aging. “This electronic facial provides deep cleansing, correction and rehydration for the skin by using a device that suctions dead skin cells, debris and trapped oil from the skin, while simultaneously infusing different formulas of invigorating ingredients during each phase,” she says. “Your skin is then airbrushed with a customized peptide, followed with oxygen to provide incredibly hydrated, luminous skin.”
Kelsey Ramsbottom, spa director at Pavo Salon Spa, says, “Our Tulasara Facial Treatments allow our estheticians to perform a thorough consultation and create a customized experience for our guests with every visit. As the seasons change, our skin goes through changes, too. It is wonderful to be able to adapt and update our facials for guests with every visit.” The treatments are from Aveda.
What Clients Want
This time of year, client requests run the gamut, from laser hair removal to cellulite smoothing, all in the name of shaping up for spring.
At Mona Esthetics, popular spring treatments are the Ulthera NeckLift for sagging skin on the neck; brown spot removal, laser hair and tattoo removal; and the UltraShape Fat Melter and SmoothShapes Cellulite treatment.
Kate from Solutions Medical Center says clients are requesting the Rejuvapen micro-needling treatment. “Since micro-needling enhances the production of collagen, the treatment can reverse the signs of sun damage, improve the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation.”
At McDonald Murmann, tightening treatments for tired, dull skin, and treatments to correct uneven skin tone are the most requested, says Jeni.
Effective organic skin care solutions are popular among clients of Amber from Renew Wellness Spa. “As people realize that most skin care options are full of toxic chemicals, there is a huge movement by many women to use natural skin care,” she explains.
And Kelsey of Pavo says that guests are asking for dermaplaning. “It is a simple, safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine hair. We offer it as a stand-alone service, or as an add-on to our 60- or 90-minute Tulasara Facial Treatments.”
Pearls of Wisdom
While there are plenty of face-saving options to choose from, here are some words of wisdom from the experts to get you started.
“Make sure you are getting plenty of hydration,” says Amber from Renew. “Most of us skimp on the water in the winter leaving our skin dull and deflated.”
Mona of Mona Esthetics offers these words: “Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate to get those skin cells moving!”
Kate from Solutions reminds us that sunscreen is a must-wear, even in the spring. “If you’ve been hiding inside all winter long, your skin may be especially vulnerable to sunburn.”
And Jeni at McDonald Murrmann has the perfect tip for better skin for all seasons. “Seek a professional that you trust and who can assess your skin’s unique needs,” she says. “Choose someone with experience who can guide you toward your best skin.”
