A new wine and cupcake bar, The Corked Carrot, will open this weekend in the South Main Arts District. The name alone is enticing, and the concept is absolutely original! Owner Neil Armstrong loved the song “Carrot Cake and Wine” by The Stereophonics, hence the name. The idea, in summary, equals the lighthearted fun of hanging out with friends in a relaxed setting (when you have had enough caffeine at the coffee shop!) plus an enthusiasm for all that is local in Memphis.
The Corked Carrot will be redefining some familiar terms in the realm of food and wine:
1. Cupcake—No longer just a dessert, this unique café will be serving gourmet cupcakes that suit your sweet tooth, but they will also be turning your favorite foods into “cupcakes” for a menu category of “savory options.” For example, if you order a Croque Madame, it will be shaped like a cupcake. Students at L’École Culinaire, Memphis are now competing for first place in a contest to create the cupcake-shaped Croque Madame. The winning recipe will be announced on May 2 and featured on The Corked Carrot menu alongside the student’s name. In addition to cupcakes, both savory and sweet, the restaurant will be serving a variety of macarons (French sandwich cookies) and a salad option.
2. Wine Pairing—The Corked Carrot will be pairing wine with cupcakes. Yes, you read that correctly! Each gourmet cupcake created at this clever café will have a suggested high-end wine to enjoy with it! Also, most restaurants will serve their finest wines by the glass. The Corked Carrot has installed a rare wine storage system that allows you to open and keep a bottle of wine for up to 30 days. This means the customer will not be limited to a short list of wines by the glass, and wine servings will be offered in a variety of sizes.
3. Wine on Tap—You have heard of beer on tap, but how about wine on tap? Pretty rare. The Corked Carrot is the only place in Memphis with wine kegorators, aka, wine on tap!
4. Eating local—By now this is a familiar term, but in addition to serving farm-to-table fresh ingredients, The Corked Carrot will be offering seasonal menu items according to happenings in Memphis! For example, the Memphis in May Festival has inspired the creation of traditional festival foods in the form of, you guessed it, a cupcake! Stop in for a corn dog cupcake, a cotton candy cupcake or a caramel corn cupcake. And in honor of the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest in May, there will be a pulled pork cupcake. To cheer our Grizzlies on during the playoffs, The Corked Carrot will open with a Grizzlies Macaron on the menu. They are made in Grizzlies team colors and taste just as sweet as a playoff victory will be tonight against the LA Clippers!! Go Grizz!!)
Thank you to Executive Pastry Chef Masami Yenson for giving StyleBlueprint a one-on-one preview! We look forward to your official opening this weekend … April 26 at 5 p.m. for Trolley Night and Saturday April 27 at 11 a.m.
