Simmering hot temperatures in Memphis can mean only one thing: Summer has returned. The start of a new season provides a great opportunity to assess your makeup collection and update it with fabulous new colors. We asked a few local boutiques what lip colors you should be on the lookout for this season, and here’s what they had to say:
Recommended by: Rachel’s Salon & Day Spa
Rachel’s Salon & Day Spa is an Aveda Concept Salon and has the brand’s new spring/summer collection, Rare Bloom. The inspiration for the new line is natural beauty, as in taking a cue from the beauty in your natural surroundings. The makeup is soft and natural with vibrant pops of color here and there. Featured are Nourish-Mint smoothing lip colors Magenta Berry and Sheer Peony, $16 each; Nourish-Mint rehydrating lip glaze in Fire Poppy and Pink Hibiscus, $18 each; and Nourish-Mint lip definer in Dragon Fruit, $16.
Rachel’s owner Paige Garland offers advice on how to create a Marsala lip. (FYI: Marsala is the Pantone Color of the Year.) Layer Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color in Gogi Berry with Fire Maple Lip Definer and finish with Mangosteen Lip Glaze.
Recommended by: Pavo Salon.Spa
Pavo Salon.Spa Aveda lifestyle director and makeup artist Megan Cowell Kitterlin says summer hair and makeup is all about the polished, intentional approach to natural, effortless style. For hair, that means beautiful, textured style, and for makeup, less is more with a polished finish on the lips.
Her personal favorite daytime look comes from mixing two lip glazes and pressing them into the lips for a gorgeous stained effect. In the photo below, the model is wearing Aveda’s Fire Poppy and Pink Hibiscus. For evening, a bright flirty pink with minimally defined eyes is perfect for going out in Memphis. She recommends layering Aveda’s Dragon Fruit lip liner, Magenta Berry lip color and Pink Hibiscus glaze.
Recommended by: HEATHER Boutique and Spa
Heather Ryniec Balkunas, founder of the Memphis-based Heather cosmetics line, suggests HEATHER lip sheers in Bikini and Flip Flop, $26 each, for the perfect pout, plus a hit of pink or peach for summery lips. Her lip sheers have SPF15, are made in the USA, and are paraben- and cruelty-free.
BRAND: Laura Mercier
Recommended by: Joseph
Joseph’s beauty/cosmetic manager Eddie Shada recommends Laura Mercier’s Paint Wash liquid lip color, $28, in Vermillion Red for a fresh coat of intense liquid color. Eddie also likes Laura Mercier’s Paint Wash because it stays on!
BRAND: Trish McEvoy
Recommended by: Oak Hall
Oak Hall’s Trish McEvoy regional artist Lesa Goodwin advises three colors for this summer: Perfect Nude lip and cheek, $30, for the perfect summer glow; Irresistible gloss, $25, for adding that bronze glow, which works on any lip color; and Kisses lip color, $28, for that ideal summer red.
