We’ve all heard it time and time again: Drinking extra water to stay hydrated is essential to luminous locks and glowing skin, and the conventional wisdom is that drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day is the magic number. While drinking plenty of water may seem easy enough, incorporating any additional steps into your daily summer beauty regimen — additional products, treatments and the like — may seem daunting. Fortunately, the secret to perfect summer skin and hair is no longer a secret. We asked local beauty experts for their foolproof tips and product suggestions for keeping skin and hair looking great all summer long, and they delivered.
1. Hone your technique.
Fight oily skin with a skin care regimen that’s specific for summer. Use an exfoliating cleanser to remove dead skin cells and follow with an alcohol-free toner to manage the humidity’s effects on your skin, like this pair from Obagi ($37.50 and $45 respectively) at McDonald + Murrmann Center For Skin, Laser & Healthy Aging. At night, add retinol to encourage cellular turnover and further exfoliation.
2. Apply, apply, reapply!
Sun protection is key to ensuring your skin is healthy and protected for any summer activity. A daily moisturizer containing SPF will protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays and eliminate the need for an additional morning product. Heather Boutique and Spa offers a paraben-free, antiaging moisturizer with broad spectrum SPF 30, $39, and a paraben-free antioxidant day cream with SPF 15, $41. Make sure to reapply sunscreen during prolonged time in the sun or after vigorous activity.
3. Protect your locks.
“Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from the sun,” according to Roy Evans of New Beginnings by Roy Evans. “Use hair products with UVA and UVB protection. Or, if you’re in a bind,” he suggests, “use sunscreen on your hair or throw on a baseball cap. A quick shower will remove the sunscreen, and your color will stay intact.”
4. Go natural.
ColoreScience Tint du Soleil SPF 30 UV Protective Foundation ($54, Mona Esthetics) is a tinted, sheer, cream-based foundation with sun protection SPF 30. Opt for this antioxidant-rich formula that will protect your skin while its lightweight coverage provides a natural summer glow.
5. Perfect your pout.
We can’t live without the GrandeLips Plumper ($27, Mona Esthetics). With its instant boosting effect, you will get that perfect pout every time. It goes on smooth and lasts for hours, eliminating the need to touch up throughout the day.
6. Switch up your color style.
A summer trend in color is a soft, bright cheek paired with moist, colorful lips and neutral shadows. The artists at Heather Boutique and Spa urge you to experiment with your colors over the summer. Some of the their favorite shadows include Jade, Threshold and Khaki (each $12), as well as their gel eyeliners in Voyage, Noble and Baroque (each $24).
7. Pretreat before taking the plunge.
Chlorine is a natural bleach, which can really strip your hair of moisture and color. New Beginnings’ Roy Evans recommends that you fight chlorine by wetting your hair with regular water and applying a heavy conditioner before swimming.
8. Combat dryness.
Heavier, leave-in conditioners must be included in your summer hair regimen. Roy offers his salon’s clients conditioning Shine Foam ($24) to keep the hair soft and add shine without relying on oil, which can make the hair look greasy and lose its shape. This foam offers the benefits of an oil-based conditioning product without the negatives.
