Just because there are fewer events happening this summer doesn’t mean you have to ditch all the fun. There is still plenty to do all around town, like sunset kayak tours and live music at wineries. So, let’s get to planning! Here are five ideas for the perfect Memphis summer outing.
5 Timely Ways to Spend a Summer Day in Memphis
Watch a Movie at Malco Summer Drive-In
Load up the family or grab your date, and head to the drive-in on Summer Avenue to watch a movie from the comfort of your car or picnic blanket. One of the best things about this summer outing is you can pack all the popcorn, snacks and drinks you want. Look for classic films (Jaws, anyone?) as well as new releases. For a complete list of movies and showtimes, click here. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $20 per car. Malco Summer Drive In is located at 5310 Summer Avenue, Memphis , TN 38122. Learn more at (901) 767-4320.
Ride a Kayak at Sunset
Kayak Memphis has guided sunset tours available by appointment at the Memphis River Park. Or if you want to ride on the water without a guide — before or after sunset — you can also rent a kayak, tandem kayak or stand-up paddleboard Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with no reservation required. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this is a unique way to see spectacular views of the Memphis skyline. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards can be rented from the Harbor on the Memphis Riverfront for $20 each. The price includes your choice of watercraft as well as a paddle and life vest. Go on an Ape Treetop Adventure (or Throw Some Axes!)
Each Ape Treetop Adventure is a two- to three-hour experience where you can take on obstacles, climb through the trees and even get on an epic Tarzan swing. If you’re not into ziplining, Go Ape also offers axe throwing, where you can reveal your inner lumberjack. Go Ape is located at 651 North Pine Lake Drive, Memphis, TN 38134. Wine Tasting at Delta Blues Winery
In the suburbs of Lakeland, TN, lies the Delta Blues Winery, offering wine tastings, live music and fun with family and friends. Each tasting includes four wines, and tours are available if time permits. If wine isn’t your thing, they offer beer as well. They’re open Monday and Tuesday by appointment only, and Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Delta Blues Winery is located at 6585 Stewart Road, Lakeland, TN 38002. Learn more at (901) 829-4685 or visit deltablueswine.com.
