Once I read a story about a butterfly in the subway, and today I saw one. I couldn’t believe it. It got on at 42nd — and got off at 59th, where I assume it was going to Bloomindale’s to buy a hat that will turn out to be a mistake. As almost all hats are.
– Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) in You’ve Got Mail (1998), a film by Nora Ephron
Not all hats match this description, but many do. Now, unless you are a member of the Royal Family, one perfect sun hat, a few athletic caps and maybe one up-to-date statement hat for the season’s wardrobe should suffice. Dress hats tend to collect dust on my shelf after the momentary excitement of a fun purchase. But you must admit, a truly elegant, lady-like hat—especially one that reflects classic, big-brimmed, Hollywood style—is always tempting!
Nine months out of the year, buying a glamorous hat practically requires you to plan a tea party around the purchase of that fancy chapeau. Not so in the summer; a big-brimmed sun hat that is a little over the top simply says you’ve got style!
Shop locally and try it on …
Sometimes it is best to try a few hats on in the store to be sure the style fits well and matches your face shape. There are many local boutiques that offer a few seasonal options, the makings of a fun afternoon shopping quest! More Therapy, Kate Spade and Outdoors, Inc. are three local stops where you might find your perfect summer hat.
