From “lobs,” tousled locks, braids and updos, to balayage, eclipting and how to maintain your look with confidence, we’ve got the trending haircuts and styling advice to give you a fresh look for spring and carry you through the summer in style!
Spring 2017 Hair Trends
It seems like versatility is the order of the day: as the mid-length cut and long locks — all in natural shades — dominate the hair scene. Both can be worn in a variety of styles, from casual and beachy to elegant braids and sweeping updos. “Mid-lengths and long, loose, layered hair is seen everywhere,” says Scot Robinson, co-owner and stylist at Pavo Salon Spa, with locations in East Memphis and Midtown. “Some of our favorite celebrities sporting these looks are Emma Stone, Chrissy Teigen, Kristen Bell, and Lily Collins, just to name a few.”
If you have long hair and want a fresh look for spring, just ask your stylist for a “lob.” You’ll walk out of the salon with a long bob, and into the new season with a cool style for the warmer weather ahead. The cut has the feel of long hair, but stops anywhere from a few inches below the jawline to just above the shoulder. Shiny and straight or softened with loose waves, it’s right for almost anyone and workable for all occasions. But it’s just one of many fabulous trending styles that can give you a fresh, new look this season.
“This spring, we’re seeing a rise in shorter styles,” says Rachel Delgado, owner and stylist of Juve Salon Spa in East Memphis. “Lobs to above-the-collarbone cuts with short waves are really trending. All of which feature softer shades and nothing harsh.”
The French Bohemian Look
A “French bohemian look,” often worn by model Gigi Hadid, is really big this season, Scot of Pavo says. “This is a lived-in, yet polished look that translates day into night.”
This look combines tousled yet natural locks for a quintessential Brigitte Bardot-esque look. Add a little teasing for a slightly edgier bohemian feel, or smooth your hair into loosely curled waves for a style that is polished, but touchable and natural.
Celeb-worthy Styling Trends
Rachel of Juve points to the red carpet as a source of inspiration. “The award shows featured a lot of soft updos and interesting braiding techniques,” she says. “The overall look is very whimsical and less harsh than we’ve seen before.”
Blake Brown, master stylist/color specialist at New Beginnings by Roy Evans in East Memphis, says that while long, sleek hair is still trendy, the lob looks great for spring’s trending styling options. “Worn with soft waves, it can be dressed up or down. Throw in a braid, and you’re ready for a day of fun in the sun. One side swept back with a pretty hair accessory makes for a glam nighttime look.” Blake adds that celebrity styles are featuring less volume on top, and more on the sides and back, thanks to increasingly popular middle parts and deep side parts.
“A lot of celebrities are opting for softer hues and a more natural look. We’re seeing a lot of more natural shades of blondes and copper tones increasing in popularity,” Rachel says. Clients are following that lead. “Through coloring techniques, such as hair painting and balayage (a French freehand highlighting technique), a lot of clients are getting more of what they want with less maintenance.”
Scot says balayage, ombre and hair painting have been dominating hair color for the last few seasons and are still very popular. “What we expect to see this spring and into the summer is a new way of approaching hair color called ‘eclipting’,” he says. “This is a technique that contours hair color around the face by taking facial features into consideration. Our stylists maintain a darker color to frame the face, while fine-weave foils are placed on the top of the head to add contrast. This is similar to using makeup to contour the face, but instead stylists are using light and shadows with hair coloring to achieve the same effect.”
Trend Do’s and Don’ts
Great looks start with healthy hair. Rachel from Juve advises applying as little heat as possible to hair to keep it healthy. And stay away from boxed color.
“Hair ‘do’s’ are whatever looks best on you and reflects your own personal style,” says Blake from New Beginnings by Roy Evans. Soft, shiny and movable hair is the goal. “I think the length between the jaw line and top of the shoulder is universally flattering for any face shape,” Blake says, adding that romantic, loose curls and beachy waves soften any look. “Long layers framing the face are great for longer faces, and textured cuts are a curly-haired girl’s best friend.”
For Scot from Pavo, there are no do’s and don’ts in hair now. “Owning your look says, ‘I’m confident and secure, and I feel great about myself.'”
Once you get the style you love, the right products can help you keep it. At Juve, Aveda products are used because they are natural and less damaging to the hair, Rachel says. Some of their bestsellers are rosemary-mint shampoo and conditioner, “Be Curly” style prep, control force firm hold hairspray and phomollient styling foam.
Scot of Pavo also advocates for Aveda products, specifically their dry shampoo and dry thermal conditioner to extend the life of your style between shampooing or to add volume and texture for that carefree, lived-in look.
Blake of New Beginnings by Roy Evans suggested that ladies with fine hair use a volume-enhancing product. For thicker, more coarse hair, choose serums and leave-in conditioners. “Regardless of your type of style, you need that foundation product to help retain your look all day, she says. “Finish with a workable hairspray and light shine spray, and you’re ready to go.”
