More is more this swim season, and by more we mean more coverage. With some of our favorite designers diving into the bathing suit game, beautiful one pieces in particular have really grabbed our attention. All hail the maillot! (That’s designer-speak for the one piece.) Not to bash the bikini, but if you have ever craved more coverage while also wanting to stay stylish and current as you sit around the pool in little more than your skivvies, then you’re in luck. Today we explore these very trendy suits that are making a big splash.
Recently we’ve seen movie characters wearing maillots, like Amy Adams’ character in American Hustle. And Andi, the contestant on The Bachelor who was not “okay” with Juan Pablo’s cavalier attitude, sported two different versions of one-piece suits. (We didn’t even know this was allowed!) On-trend looks this season are nothing like the prudish, skirted suits you might remember your mother wearing decades ago, although retro-inspired styles are all the rage. What we’re really loving is how the right silhouette for your body type and personality can be not only slenderizing, but surprisingly sexy, too — it’s good to leave something to the imagination. (So, go right ahead and imagine our chiseled 6-pack abs all you want!)
Here are some of our favorite examples of this season’s swim trend:
Swimmers take your mark, and go for these sporty styled suits featuring PilyQ’s black and white stripes or the solid gold stunner by MIKOH.
This season, ruffles and bows are back in a big way! So, if sweet and preppy (with a hint of sexy) is your vibe, you’re in luck!
Vintage lovers will swoon over all the retro styles and retro-inspired prints popping up at pools near you. We like the prim lines and bold colors of the Le Shine suit from Marc by Marc Jacobs available at Bloomingdales, as well as the muted tones and equally modest shape by Tory Burch.
Now here’s a new term to add to your bathing suit repertoire: the monokini. These suits often tie around the neck and at the back like your favorite halter bikini styles, but cover the tummy, too. From the back it’s sure hard to tell it’s a one piece!
As racy as these next styles may seem, let’s remember that you are still more covered up than you’d be in a bikini. So, if it’s sexy you’re looking for, there is no shortage of plunging necklines, mesh inserts and barely-there backsides this season. But, the tan lines you will get may end up a little odd …
Whatever style appeals, this season’s wide array of maillots has got you covered!
