Even though it is February, it feels like spring outside. The mild temperatures we are enjoying in Memphis are making winter clothes seem dark and uninteresting. Store windows are now showing pre-spring ensembles. The lighter weight fabrics and colorful patterns are a welcome sight. One store featuring a wide range of pre-spring 2013 selections is Ella, located in Chickasaw Oaks Village.
Ella is known for its streamlined shopping experience; individual items and clever combinations are readily visible. Manager Jamie Yarbrough confirmed my observation that displays are symmetrically arranged and never over-crowded, putting creative choices within reach. Jamie and her staff will complete this task each night before they leave. As a result, browsing at Ella is always a relaxing and rewarding experience—many choices, but never overwhelming because of the inviting presentation. Jamie says they are currently showing transitional, early spring options in follow-up to the resort-wear season.
This Trina Turk cotton knit maxi dress was part of Ella’s resort collection, but resort pieces can be ideal tor transitioning into spring, $228.
This eyelet turquoise dress by Nanette Lepore represents a popular color choice for spring, $378.
Usher spring into your wardrobe quickly by pairing your classic black-and-white pieces with bright colors. This black-and-white top is by Parker, $187; and kelly green pants are by Trina Turk, $188.
A red and white dress with a peplum, which is in style and flattering to most figures. Stripes are also big this year. This classic Nanette Lepore dress has just a bit of stretch for a more comfortable fit, $378. Statement necklace by Marlyn Schiff, $82.
You will see a lot of pattern mixing this year. Sales associate Elizabeth Livingston explains that blending patterns is successful when two key components are in place: 1) the combination of a small pattern with a large pattern, and 2) repetition of color from one pattern to the next. This dress by Nanette Lepore, $398, illustrates Elizabeth’s explanation for making this tricky but fun style direction work.
This dress by Milly, $368, is an example of popular traits for spring 2013: bold color and, again, the peplum and bold pattern. The exposed zipper in the back gives this otherwise traditional choice a contemporary touch.
The dolman sleeved, high-low cut sweater is a good choice for transitional wear when days are warm and nights are cool. This colorful top is by Autumn Cashmere, $209. This company is known for wonderful cashmere pieces, and they also make rich, soft cotton sweaters for warmer seasons. White James jeans, $172, are a foundational item for springtime wardrobes—known for the comfortable yet stylish mid-rise fit, James is one of Ella’s most popular jean brands. The necklace is by Whitley V Designs, $55.
While we may not be able to hold onto the springtime temperatures we have enjoyed this week before going through at least one more cold spell, it is possible to bring dependable spring selections into your 2013 wardrobe early. The weather may be unpredictable right now, but you can count on the collection at Ella to make the winter-spring transition a stylish experience.
