More Memphis Fashion

April 10, 2012 by Lindsey Hedgepeth

The passion for fashion continues in Memphis! Here’s the rundown for the next fashion designer and native Memphian to debut her latest collection here in the Bluff City to benefit the mission of BRIDGES.

Today’s post was written by Allison Brownlow, Annual Fund and Donor Relations Manager at BRIDGES.

The designer

Yendry Alvord began her journey as a fashion designer at the age of eight in her native country of Costa Rica. “Becoming a fashion designer was like second nature for me,” she says. Yendry studied business at the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica and attended the Instituto Saint Jane for Fashion Design. She met her now husband, Brent Alvord, in Costa Rica and came to the United States once they decided to marry. Since moving to Memphis she has continued to pursue her dreams of becoming a fashion designer. Currently, Yendry has completed six collections for various fashion shows in the Memphis area. However, she says, “There is always a collection in progress at my house.” Yendry balances being a fashion designer with being a full-time mother of three: Gatlin, Benjamin and Amberlyn. Her family gives her the inspiration she needs to continue pursuing her dreams as well as giving back to the community.

Yendry has worked with several nonprofit organizations in Memphis, including St. Jude, creating collections exclusively for their benefit. You can view her newest collection on Saturday, April 14th at 7:30p.m. at the BRIDGES 2012 Fashion Show: Sharing Our Worlds Thru Fashion. All proceeds from the event will benefit the mission of BRIDGES to build a community of leaders to advance racial, economic, educational and environmental justice. Marking a very special milestone in the organization’s history, this event is just one of many to help BRIDGES celebrate their 90th Anniversary. The show will feature a new collection designed exclusively for BRIDGES and will even feature some models who are current participants in Bridge Builders®, BRIDGES’ signature youth program.

Special guest Mearl Purvis of Fox 13 News Memphis will serve as special emcee of the evening. Festivities will kick off with a pre-party for VIP ticket holders with a Miami Fusion Cuisine and Cocktail Hour followed by a pre-show featuring local boutiques Style Junkie and Sachë. Audience members will be captivated as Yendry’s unique designs take their turn on the runway as the main event, after which all guests will enjoy the after-party celebration featuring music by DJ Tree and complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and a selection of beer, wine or a signature cocktail.

The fashion show at BRIDGES is one of their events celebrating the organization's 90th anniversary

“I feel a great responsibility to get involved within our community and helping others,” says Yendry. “BRIDGES gave me the opportunity to do just that with the BRIDGES 2012 Fashion Show.”
