Meredith Christenberry was born into the art world. With a great-grandmother, mother and aunt who are all artists, Meredith has been lovingly surrounded by visual art since birth. An artist in her own right, Meredith has found her niche on the other side of the easel, marketing and selling art. It started with a simple action of posting her mom’s and aunt’s paintings online and has evolved into a thriving endeavor.
In 2015, Meredith decided to turn her passion into a business, the Christenberry Collection, which showcases a group of outstanding, Southern artists with varying styles and palettes. Meredith curates a unique collection of artwork for both local and national collectors, and the artists she represents are as unique as the pieces they create. The art in the Christenberry Collection ranges from small gifts to large statement pieces, each one bringing unique joy to the recipient.
Based in Columbia, SC, Meredith manages online sales for the artists in her collection, but is drawn to meeting people face to face. Whether it is through a one-on-one consultation or hosting a home show, Meredith loves getting to know a homeowner’s personality and style. With this knowledge, Meredith thoughtfully selects pieces from artists she knows the homeowner will love.
Grounded in the idea that art finds people, Meredith believes the best art tells a story, captivating just the right buyer. Meredith’s love for art radiates through the collection of artists she represents. We’re excited to introduce you to Meredith Christenberry, in her own words.
I having been painting with my mom for as long as I remember. Her grandmother and her sister are artists, and she started painting after she had me. I can remember sitting in her lap as a very young girl while she would paint. She started us all in art classes very early!
A few years ago, I started posting my mom’s and my aunt’s paintings online. There was so much interest in their artwork that other artists asked me to post their art on my site. It’s evolved from there.
Most of the artists in my collection I have some sort of personal connection with. Several of them I have known for most of my life. Several girls that I went to high school with in Sumter, SC, are a part of the collection. Artists like Joanna Clinkscales, Lauren Neville, Ashley McLeod and Sarah Bowers are part of that group. It’s fun to work with friends.
Other artists I have found through Instagram. Some I came across, I like to say, by the grace of God. I definitely have a distinct and diverse group, which makes it fun and interesting. In general, if I love the art and artist, they will be a fit for my collection!
Closing the Deal
Part of my approach is online flash sales. They are successful. It keeps people interested and coming back to the Instagram feed. The online sales are certainly evolving. I try to keep it fresh and interesting.
Selling art online can be hard. Having a client who has not seen the piece or example of the artist’s work can be a hurdle. This is my biggest challenge. If you can allow someone to visualize it in their home, the piece sells itself. We do lots of staging, and that helps.
I also meet clients by appointment at the gallery located in The Shops at Cricket Newman Designs and do home consultations in town. Home consultations are the fun part! I love seeing a client’s space and style. It helps me find the best art for them.
Don’t Make it Complicated
Buying art doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes people overthink it, but I want people to keep it simple. Find a piece or an artist that “speaks” to you. Buy it. If you connect to it, if it represents something for you, you will always find the right spot for it!
The Best of Both Worlds
I love what I do. It allows me to be a mom, but also be involved with art; whether it’s creating it or selling it. That’s the key! I am a better a better mom and wife by having the opportunity to do what I love!
