Memphis News You Need!

August 26, 2016 by Sally Walker

Is there any doubt that Memphis is the place to be? We think not. To point – all the positive news that just keeps coming out of the Bluff City. Here’s a round up, in case you haven’t checked back in from your summer vacay.

StyleBlueprint Launches the “SINCE 1920” T-shirt Collection

Obviously, we’re a little biased so we had to put this one first … We are proud to offer two t-shirt designs: “SINCE 1920 #womensvotesmatter” and “The Perfect 36,” each of which celebrates a woman’s right to vote through the 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920 when the 36th state, Tennessee, voted in favor of ratification. This battle was hard-fought and each time we vote, we recognize our right and privilege and give thanks to the sacrifices made by generations of women before us. It was a battle that took 72 years — from the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848 to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Women celebrating their right to vote is non-partisan and, no matter what side of the aisle you are on, this t-shirt is for you!

Visit the StyleBlueprint Marketplace to read more about how close the 19th Amendment came to NOT being ratified … it all came down to one vote. ONE VOTE. These t-shirts tell the tale of every single vote having purpose — even yours! Both styles are available for purchase by clicking the link and visiting our online marketplace now! And 10% of all proceeds of “The Perfect 36” t-shirt will go to support the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument, LLC!

Since 1920 t-shirt collection

StyleBlueprint just launched the “SINCE 1920” T-shirt collection consisting of two designs: “SINCE 1920 #womensvotesmatter” and “The Perfect 36,” each of which celebrates a woman’s right to vote through the 19th Amendment. You can get your own shirt by visiting the StyleBlueprint Marketplace now!

FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms Park Opens

The first of the major components of the Shelby Farms Park Heart of the Park project opened: the FedEx Event Center. The gorgeous building sits along the expanded Patriot Lake and features a huge ballroom/conference center that can be configured in a gazillion ways. (Okay, maybe a few less than gazillion … but you get the point).

Malco Announces New Downtown Theater

The Malco folks announced that it’s received a grant to help with its $9 million undertaking to retrofit the Powerhouse at Central Station into an eight-screen movie theater. Construction is expected to start ASAP and the plan is for the theater to be open for the 2017 holiday blockbuster season, which includes Star Wars, Episode VIII,  scheduled for release on Dec. 15, 2017. May the force be with the construction crew!

Aw, Shucks!

A famous Florida oyster bar is expanding and guess what? Memphis is the choice for its second location. Indian Pass Raw Bar is known for its vintage location inside a 100-plus-year-old building along the Florida marshes on Highway 30A, between Port St. Joe and Apalachicola. The inland Memphis location will be in the former Chiwawa restaurant space at 2059 Madison Ave. in Overton Square.

Calling Starving (and Other) Artists

The Downtown Memphis Commission announced it is commissioning between seven to 10 art installations for a semi-permanent display on Barboro Alley. Interested artists should consider attending the Alley Exploration Party on September 1 to learn more. The party is from  5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Barboro Alley (between Second Street and Front Street) and the staff from the DMC will be on hand to talk potential designs, use of the space and more with artists and guests. Bonus: There’s also free beer and snacks. Sign us up!

Levitt Announces Fall Lineup

We love fall — and the fact that it’s once again cool enough to truly enjoy a concert at the Levitt Shell. The Shell’s fall lineup was announced this month and it’s awesome, in our humble opinion. All events are family friendly, and outside food and drink is allowed — although food trucks and vendors are always on hand, too. Bonus: Levitt Shell presents films throughout the fall on Thursdays at 7 p.m., too. Grab that lawn chair — and we’ll see you at the Shell!

We’re So Fly

Southern Airways announced two new nonstop routes this month. The first, from Memphis International Airport (MEM) and the Nashville International Airport (BNA), with daily flights (excluding Saturday) starting September 26, 2016. Southern will also launch nonstop service between Memphis and Jackson, Mississippi’s Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN) on September 26, 2016. Like all Southern Airways flights from Memphis, the new flights will arrive and depart from the Signature Flight Support executive terminal at 2488 Winchester Road, across from the main passenger terminal.

The Farmer Blooms in New Digs

Mac Edwards moved The Farmer from Highland to the Chickasaw Oaks center in mid-August and the new space is as popular as the old. Congrats to Mac, whose next move is to open Brooks Pharm2Fork in Collierville, which has been slightly delayed thanks to the labyrinth that is bringing an historic building up to code.

That’s your monthly wrap-up!
