February is filled with events to please Memphians of all ages: sports fans, lovers of all things culinary, fashionistas and arts enthusiasts … get your calendar ready to pencil in these dates for the coming month.
Carlyle Wolfe and Anne Siems at David Lusk Gallery
Until the day breathes…, a showing of works by Carlyle Wolfe, opens on Friday, February 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and runs from February 4 to March 8. This is Carlyle’s first solo exhibition in Memphis. Her large multi-media paintings are an intense study of color in nature. Few have the chance to rise early and observe the exchange of light and color that occurs between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 in the morning. Carlyle made this her career for an entire year–studying the different hues of color, rhythms and patterns that develop in order to gain a deeper understanding of the natural world’s ultimate design. A new exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Anne Siems, Trees, opens: Friday, February 7, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at David Lusk Gallery. The show runs from February 4 to March 8, 2014. For many years in her art, Siems placed her ghostly figures and woodland friends in an imagined location–a serene blending of European forests and early American landscapes. In Trees, Siems is, for the first time in her career, depicting a contemporary and very recognizable place–the Pacific Northwest, her home of the past two decades.
