Throughout August, we are sad to see summer fade away, but happy that fall is in sight. Here are a few activities in Memphis to help us hang on to summer!
August 1 & August 22: Live at the Garden

August 1 – 24: The Price is Right Exhibition at David Lusk Gallery
The annual Price is Right exhibition takes center stage at David Lusk in Memphis this August with a great selection of almost 50 artists, all showing original works priced under $1000.
Works from artists from a wide range of backgrounds and influences, from different parts of Tennessee and across the nation will be represented in this exciting show. See sculpture, mixed media and works on panel and canvas—a limitless scope of subject matter that is refreshing and creative.
August 7: Backstage Bash at the Orpheum
Here’s your chance to get a star’s view of the Orpheum! August 7 at 6 p.m., enter through the famous “Stage Door” on Beale Street and experience life backstage while enjoying food from Central BBQ, Gus’s Fried Chicken and Frost. August 8: Wine Down at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens

August 9 – 17: Elvis Week
Elvis Week 2014, a celebration of the life and career of Elvis, will take place Saturday, August 9 – Sunday, August 17 at Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis. Graceland is bringing back the Elvis Week Main Stage this year so fans can enjoy their Elvis Week days on the Graceland campus and participate in some new exciting events! August 12: Memphis Botanic Garden Food Truck Garden Party Series
Join the Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG) for this unique series of events in 2014. This garden party includes dinner al fresco, live music, cash bar and, of course, a line-up of local food trucks. The evening lasts from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. MBG members, $5 and non-members, $10.

August 16: Elvis 5k
All ages are welcome to compete in the Elvis 5k event in support of the charitable organization Livitup. The mission at Livitup, Inc. is to advance the independence and productivity of children and adults with various types of disabilities. The money raised through the Elvis 5k helps support Camp Livitup and other programs Liveitup offers in the community.
Online pre-registration ends on August 1, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. Registration and race packet pick-up is at Fleet Feet Sports on August 14 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and August 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fleet Feet Sports. August 19: The Great Wine Performances at Playhouse on the Square
August 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., enjoy an evening of trivia, great wine and even greater fun at Playhouse on the Square! This year’s theme is a celebration of their 45th anniversary. Favorite characters from Playhouse’s long and varied history will serve you wines while you test your knowledge of some of their most popular plays to win lots of great prizes. August 21: Must Love Marisol at the Brooks
Must Love Marisol, an evening with DJs, fashion trucks, dancing and art all in one place on August 21 from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. This fun-filled event takes place alongside the current exhibit, Marisol: Sculptures and Works on Paper, which is on display at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art through September 7.
Celebrate the end of summer with Marisol-inspired art-making, breakdancing and more. The party starts out on the plaza, with visiting mobile retail trucks. Inside the museum, get creative with Spillit, Adam the Poet, Memphis Urban Sketchers, and the Grit Grind Breakdance Squad. In the auditorium, see Andy Warhol’s 1963 film, Kiss, featuring Marisol, with a special soundscape created onsite by IMAKEMADBEATS.
Set throughout the Memphis Brooks Museum, this special evening benefits the museum’s public programs department, which screens more than 100 films annually and offers diverse programs throughout the year. $10; free for Brooks members; and includes a cash bar. brooksmuseum.org
August 22: Opening of The Addams Family at Theatre Memphis
Beginning August 22, take a seat at Theatre Memphis to enjoy The Addams Family, a musical comedy by Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice and Andrew Lippa that is coming to the Lohrey Stage. Directed by Cecelia Wingate, the weird and wonderfully beloved Addams family, created by cartoonist Charles Addams, comes to devilish life in this bright and comically macabre new musical. theatrememphis.org
Through August 28: Thursdays Squared
A new live music experience happening this spring and summer at the Tower Courtyard (Trimble Place and Florence Street) on Thursday nights. Taking place in the Tower Courtyard at Overton Square (adjacent to parking garage) from 6 to 11 p.m. on Thursdays through August 28. Live bands, wine and beer sales, giveaways and more. Covers will be affordable ($5 to $15 depending on the headlining band); beer and wine will be for sale, and there will be parking in the parking garage. overtonsquare.com
August 29: Trolley Night on South Main
The next Trolley Night on South Main will take place Friday, August 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. Jump on board!
Shops, restaurants and galleries in the area open their doors to Memphians and visitors on Trolley Nights. It is a wonderful way to browse the stores and galleries for a unique piece of art, clothing or jewelry while sipping a glass of wine and partaking of the wide array of tasty party foods. Slip onto the trolley for a free ride to the next stop and more shops. End the evening with dinner at one of the district’s fine restaurants.
