We have all heard these words from The Fantasticks show tune, “Try to remember the kind of September when life was slow and oh, so mellow…” Well, it’s certainly not slow and mellow in Memphis in September! Here is a sampling of the many places to eat, shop, play and dine in our city, a particularly action-packed place in early fall!

Through September 14, 2014: The Addams Family
Beginning August 22, take a seat at Theatre Memphis to enjoy The Addams Family, a musical comedy by Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice and Andrew Lippa that is coming to the Lohrey Stage. Directed by Cecelia Wingate, the weird and wonderfully beloved Addams family, created by cartoonist Charles Addams, comes to devilish life in this bright and comically macabre new musical. theatrememphis.org
Through September 7, 2014: Delta Fair & Music Festival

September 3 – October, 2014 11: Greely Myatt exhibit at David Lusk Memphis
And sums it all up for Greely Myatt. That simple word is the title of his fall 2014 sculpture exhibition at David Lusk Gallery Memphis. The show is a continuation of his spring solo exhibition at David Lusk Gallery Nashville, and a furtherance of Myatt’s focus on the “cartoon speech bubble.” And, will run from September 3 to October 11 with an opening on Friday, September 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
September 5, 2014: Art on Tap at Dixon Gallery & Gardens
Broaden your cultural horizons! Art on Tap is the Dixon’s annual beer tasting. Sample delicious craft beer and food in the beautiful Dixon gardens. September 6, 2014: “The Great Catsby,” Zoo Rendezvous
One of the many perks to joining the zoo is a chance to attend one of Memphis’ best events, the annual Zoo Rendezvous, happening this year on Saturday, September 6 from 7 to 10:30 p.m.
This year’s theme is “The Great Catsby.” This is the Memphis Zoo’s largest fundraiser of the year. They will have fare from more than 80 restaurants and bars, as well as entertainment on four stages. This is a Zoo members-only event. Ages 21 and up. Tickets are $200. memphiszoo.org
September 6 – 7, 2014: The 43rd Annual Germantown Festival
One of the longest, continuously run festivals in the area, the 43rd Annual Germantown Festival will once again provide a free family fun weekend for all. September 10, 2014: Workshop by Will Write for Food Author, Dianne Jacob

Stage Door Productions, located at the Salvation Army Kroc Center of Memphis, is presenting Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures September 12 – 21, 2014. Enjoy a delightful new version of Kenneth Grahame’s always popular The Wind in the Willows. Toad of Toad Hall is an eccentric but likable chap given to “crazes.” His latest craze involves motorcars. September 12 – October 2, 2014: Memphis Camera Club’s Places We Worship exhibit
The Memphis Camera Club’s Places We Worship event is in celebration of Architecture Month.
The photography exhibit, on loan from the permanent collection of the Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University, features over 40 black-and-white photographs of inspirational places in the Memphis Area. September 14, 2014: Wings Polo Classic
Pretty Woman meets the Kentucky Derby – Memphis style!

September 18, 2014: The Taste of Cooper Young
The Taste of Cooper Young is an annual event that offers food samples from a wide variety of local restaurants. September 19, 2014: Jazz in the Box presents Susan Marshall at GPAC
Susan Marshall is coming to the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC). This soulful Tennessee-based singer/songwriter began her music career as a classical singer before becoming a successful backup vocalist for the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lenny Kravitz, The Afghan Whigs, North Mississippi Allstars, Cat Power, Lucinda Williams and Katharine McPhee. Raised in Memphis, Marshall spent her formative years soaking up the region’s rich musical legacy, honing her own impressive pipes while listening to Otis Redding, Al Green, Mavis Staples, and Elvis Presley! Vin-A-Que returns for the third year as part of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art’s Memphis Wine + Food Series. Put Friday, September 26, 2014 at 7 p.m. on your calendar to attend this event that will feature a dream lineup of Memphis chefs and restaurateurs. Notable chefs and restaurants will prepare Memphis-style barbecue, as well as carefully curated twists like vegetarian dishes, to the Southern tradition. September 27, 2014: Spirit of Satch, Dr. John interprets Louis Armstrong at GPAC
Known throughout the world as the embodiment of New Orleans’ musical legacy, Dr. John is an icon in American culture. With special guest trumpeters and singers, Dr. John pays a loving tribute to New Orleans’ most famous son, the great Satchmo. From Mack the Knife, When the Saints and Wonderful World to his other lesser-known but seminal works, GPAC brings Pops’ world to life with gritty, swamp-style grooves and some unexpected renditions. September 30, 2014: My Big Backyard BBQ, Vine to Wine event at Memphis Botanic Garden
Join Memphis Botanic Garden for a down-home (but grown-up) party in My Big Backyard, with live music by Minor Street Strings. Light eats by Central BBQ. This event is part of the MBG monthly wine tasting series. These themed “Vine to Wine” events last from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and feature eight wines or cocktails in a casual setting.
