Have you caught the Boho vibe yet? Don’t let the name narrow your opinion of who can and cannot wear this look. There are many versions of this free-form hair style. Mary Miller Brown, stylist at the Capelli salon, treats us to one interpretation of this edgy trend that would be ideal for a range of occasions and ideal for summer.
This trend could be considered part of an unofficial music festival movement, and many celebs have been spotted wearing a version of this style. Even Elsa the snow queen was sporting a Disney princess-style of the Boho look in Frozen! Could this be where the Boho, “Let It Go” look started??? Boho is simultaneously whimsical and romantic. A perfect, imperfect look for summertime.
Here are some celebrities wearing a range of Boho looks. Anyone can take on this perfectly imperfect tousled look. Under 40? Go for it and “Let it Go!” Over 40, you may enjoy a modified interpretation such as Jennifer Aniston’s understated Boho with a braid or Jennifer Lawrence’s loose up-do. For a Boho-chic look with short hair, take a look at Ginnifer Goodwin in a halo headband.
Now welcome Mary Miller of Capelli salon, who will show us the steps to creating one version of the Boho look. You will need a halo-style headband, which can be understated and blend with the hair color to be almost invisible or bejeweled to stand out as a fun accessory. Emi Jay is a popular brand that you can find at Capelli. If you want your headband to stand out, Ellen Hunter Gorman, Memphis-born accessories designer, creates exquisite halo headbands that could be your pivotal everyday accessory or the special hair ornament for a bride.
Let’s get started with Mary Miller and a new Boho attitude:
1. Wash and dry.
Start by using a good shampoo and conditioner. Mary Miller used Oribe color shampoo and conditioner for today’s model, Melissa Miller, to get her prepped for styling.
To create volume at the roots, she used Dry Texturizing Spray by Oribe. Shake and spray where you want volume before styling. This product can also be used as an alternative to dry shampoo.
2. Create wave.
Mary Miller is using a 1-inch curling wand on Melissa’s hair. She wraps the hair around the wand, leaving the last bit in her hand to maintain a not-so-perfect, looser curl. All hair is curled in a direction away from the face.
Straight hair: You don’t have to go curly. Keep in mind, you can create this style without waves and curls. It really depends on where you are going and your personal preference.
Natural texture: Our curling step may not be necessary for those with naturally curly or wavy hair. Ease and versatility make this a great summer style. If you do not have time, and your occasion does not dictate a stepped-up hint of curl, try the Boho style and headband with the natural texture of your hair.
Mary Miller used City Swept Finish, a new product in 2014 from Bumble and Bumble. This supple-hold finishing spray is a modern misting balm for definition and control. It creates lived-in, “street-styled” looks with separation and sheen. Today, City Swept is a key ingredient to our wind swept, tousled look.
Pick hair up and spray ends and underneath. Hold up, spray and let fall. Don’t forget to use a little on the roots, too. Roughen it up, loosen and build texture, placing as you go. The City Swept spray gives grip to the hair and makes it pliable.
For a more formal look: In addition to building light texture with City Swept, tease the crown of the head to add fullness there.
4. Add your favorite halo headband.
Select any halo headband, from ornate and sparkly to one that will simply hold the hair in place and disappear. After placing the headband in a halo position, secure your accessory by adding 2 sets of criss-crossed bobby pins to the headband toward the back of your head.
5. Wrap hair around the headband.
Starting on either side, wrap a 1-inch section from right over the ear and pull underneath headband as you go towards the back of the head, adding a little more hair each time. When you reach the back, leave the end hanging down in the middle. Repeat on left side until both ends meet in the middle. To finish, wrap and tuck the two loose ends to cover up bobby pins.
Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray by Oribe will complete your look and secure tousled, touchable waves without stiffness.Spray, tousle to taste and let dry. DrySpun Finish Translucent dry spray by Bumble and Bumble also creates fullness and airy texture for dry hair after heat-styling.
Working with different hair lengths: Melissa’s long, flowing hair is perfect for this style, but any length of hair can go in a Boho direction! If you have medium-length hair, Mary Miller recommends following the same basic steps with a smaller curling wand above for similar results. If you have short hair, add the halo headband and texturize with Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray for a grittier more texturized look.
Balayage Hair Color: Another undertone to the success of Melissa’s look is her balayage hair color. This is a French word meaning “sweep away.” It is no-foil hair-coloring that features soft grow-out. Mary Miller is one of a few stylists in Memphis who has mastered this technique of hand-painting with hair color for a natural, sun-kissed look.
Thank you to our hair model, Melissa Miller, who was off to work after our shoot. Melissa is a social therapist with Dr. Allison Coke-Weatherly & Associates. She will look great all day with a hairstyle that is meant to last. Then, with a bit of finishing spray to fluff up, she is ready to go out for the evening, too!
