The running of the 142nd Kentucky Derby was last weekend, with the favorite Nyquist winning it all. Jockey Mario Gutierrez rode Nyquist to victory and he was trained by Doug O’Neill.
Trackgoers headed out to the track all week long, for racing each day. Thursday racing, otherwise known as Thurby, was freezing but fun. Oaks was a perfect day, full of lillies and the Lily drink as well. Derby was another beautiful warm day and the weather held out until right before the race, when a brief deluge soaked the track. Rain stopped in time for the crowd to cry and sing “My Old Kentucky Home” together. The race was exciting, with Nyquist, an undefeated horse coming out of the lucky 13 gate, prevailing in the end and Exaggerator and Gun Runner coming in respectively.
Locals and out of towners all wore their best, with many many more men wearing hats this year as well. For women, the theme with hats and fascinators is always, “Go big or go home!” But the real theme of the Derby is, as always, “Go Baby Go!”
