Hello, April! Finally, we’re in the month when Louisville really wakes up! We are so excited for spring blooms, longer days and the arrival of Derby season. Our city seems to just get more beautiful by the day, and we can’t think of a better time to slip on your favorite frock and experience all the events that come with springtime in Louisville.
And there are SO many events to attend. We’re highlighting three of our favorites in nine fun and sophisticated looks, all shot on location at the gorgeous and recently renovated KMAC Museum. Our highlighted events include KMAC Couture, Thunder Over Louisville and Derby week (Thurby, Oaks and Derby). OK, we know that’s cheating a bit, but Louisville women know that April means it’s time to pull those Derby looks together! Our featured looks come from three of our favorite local boutiques: Liv Boutique, Something Blue and Caden Boutique. We also included some of the incredible hats and jewelry available at the KMAC Shop this month.
Our models include three women who are all part of the KMAC family: Emily Miles, KMAC Communications Manager; Beth Heustis, KMAC Exhibitions and Collections Assistant; and Amy Hamm, a member of the KMAC Board of Directors and KMAC Couture committee member. We had so much fun shooting in their stunningly designed space filled with artwork we love!
The Event: KMAC Couture
- Saturday, April 15, 2017
- VIP reception at 7 p.m. General Admission begins at 8 p.m.
- The 700 block of West Main Street, just in front of KMAC Museum
- Tickets range from $150 to $1,000 and are available online here.
Art Walks the Runway in this fifth annual KMAC Couture fashion show on Saturday, April 15, where designers use unusual items to create one-of-a-kind couture clothing. One of Louisville’s unique art and fashion experiences, KMAC Couture happens inside a white tent that spans the length of the 700 block of West Main Street, just in front of the KMAC Museum, and is filled with 600 art and fashion lovers wearing all white attire. The show itself features 45 jaw-dropping, handmade works worn by local models walking the runway. All proceeds benefit KMAC education and outreach programming.
What to Wear: Guests wear white attire, so feel free to get daring with your choices. Creativity is definitely welcome! We went with flirty dresses, daring necklines and highly stylized accessories. While hats are not required, we added one to each look because the KMAC Shop has so many stunning styles on hand.
The Event: Your favorite “Thunder Over Louisville” party
- Saturday, April 22, 2017
- Fireworks start at nightfall, but the party starts whenever you want.
- Ticketing depends on the event you attend.
The event that officially kicks off Derby celebrations is pure magic and excitement for the entire city. You can join the thousands who gather at Waterfront Park for an up-close air show and fireworks experience, but this year we’re in the mood for something a bit more intimate. Whether you join a few hundred at the Derby Festival’s official VIP Rooftop Party, join the Copper & Kings rooftop party or score a private invitation by a friend with a great view, we’ve found three looks that are flirty, fun and Derby-inspired.
What to Wear: Keep it simple but have fun! We chose a simple floral sheath dress, a not-so-simple white tee-and-shorts combination and adorable denim pocket dress with a frayed, textured hem. These simple, fun looks should keep the fireworks going!
The Event: Derby Week
- Thurby: Thursday, May 4, 2017 | Kentucky Oaks: Friday, May 5, 2017 | Kentucky Derby 143: Saturday, May 6, 2017
- Churchill Downs, 700 Central Ave.
- Check availability for Thurby and Oaks online via Churchill Downs here.
Do we really need to explain Derby week? The Kentucky Derby is our most famous event, and the parties and fun that surround this celebrated day happen almost all April long! We chose to highlight Thurby, Oaks and Derby here, but many of the looks below would work for many events that lead up to the most exciting horse race around.
What to Wear: We know. Derby week does not happen in April, but we also know that most of Louisville is on the hunt now for the perfect Derby week wear. We also needed to fully embrace all the amazing hats available at KMAC Shop right now. We chose a range of standout styles, from romantic to sleek to funky-prep. And remember pink for Oaks!
