Spring is finally here, Louisville. After months of arctic cold and gray weather, the city is blooming — and not just the flowers. April is the month when all of the pre-Derby activities and excitement begin.
We are going full throttle into the season, but because temperatures may not comply with our plans, be sure to have a wrap or light jacket on hand.
It was hard to narrow down next month’s events and only pick three, but we managed. We chose Spring Break, Thunder Over Louisville and Opening Night at Churchill Downs. (If you are looking for Derby looks, we will have a dedicated article to that later in April.) We have found great outfits for you from local boutiques Apricot Lane, Boutique Serendipity, Merci Boutique, Liv Boutique, M.E. Modern Elegance, The Shirt Shop , Peacock Boutique, Urban Farmhouse Market, J. McLaughlin and Collections.
The Event: Spring Break 2016
- April 4 through April 8, 2016
- No tickets required!
- Destination? Wherever you want to go, preferably somewhere sunny
It’s no April Fools’ joke: Spring Break technically starts on April 1, whenever school is out. No matter if you have big plans for the beach, a cool city or if you are just planning on a staycation, here are some warm and casual outfits that will get you in the mood. And ladies, we’re not even bringing up bathing suits, just cover-ups and light dresses. Get yourself all ready to go besides the clothes; yes, we mean spray tans and waxing.
What to wear: Comfortable dresses will always take precedence here. Think loose, gauzy and either long or short. We found dresses that can also be swimsuit cover-ups, and they have SPF 50.
The Event: Thunder Over Louisville
- Saturday, April 23, 2016
- Air show starts at 3 p.m.
- Fireworks start around 9:30 p.m.
- Free admission, but get there early to get a good spot
- For information about where to park and what to do, click here.
This kickoff for Derby season is always a joy to watch, but you need to keep an eye out for the weather. It has been snowing, burning hot or raining, all depending on the year. The key is picking your spot to watch. For some people that means getting down there at zero dark thirty to nab a good patch of grass at Waterfront Park. Others go to friends’ rooftops in Butchertown or Indiana. Others watch from the comfort of their own homes. All options are good!
What to wear: Wear something casual and comfortable this year, and remember to bring a jacket or poncho if the weatherman says so!
The Event: Opening Night at Churchill Downs
- Saturday, April 30, 2016
- Churchill Downs
- 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. First race is at 6 p.m.
- Tickets start at just $10. Click here for tickets.
This event gets everyone so excited. First, it’s a racing night, which means everyone gets an evening out. Second, it’s a good chance to start laying the groundwork for Derby with your horse picks and your outfit. Many girls try out their Derby shoes this night to decide if they can handle them for a whole day of walking at Derby. A portion of the proceeds from Opening Night benefit the Fund for the Arts .
What to wear: There is a dress code, as there is for all night racing nights, and it’s Dress to Impress. “Ladies are encouraged to wear party and cocktail dresses and men sharp pants and a dress shirt; tie is optional.”
In addition to all the great jewelry we have shown above, here are a few additional picks that will look great with any of these outfits.
It’s an exciting month in Louisville! Get out and enjoy it!
