Mandy Rothberger is a recognizable face around town, always looking so hip, so chic, so…vintage. She has just started a new venture called Vintage Hip Chick and is writing a blog, doing freelance styling and personal shopping.
I asked Mandy to enlighten StyleBlueprint readers about how to wear and buy vintage. She has some great insights and great ideas for the season.
So honored to be asked to be a guest blogger! Now let’s talk vintage!
A whole other world awaits.
Think well-made garments, amazing and timeless accessories and unique, one-of-a-kind pieces to make any fashion lover a true standout. (And by the way, most of the ideas I’m sharing today come from the vintage as “timeless treasures” category.)
The key to making vintage work is mixing and matching old and new. Full-blown vintage outfits work for some gals, but not most. For a day-to-day vintage vibe, throw on a vintage dress with a denim jacket or fun blazer. Skinny jeans with a vintage cardigan and boots is another option for a chic daytime look.
For a night out, your look depends on where you are going. A family holiday get-together? Go for a ladylike vintage dress and pumps or boots.
A night on the town? Focus on vintage accessories. Vintage necklaces, brooches and purses are a cool, sophisticated way to show you are a hip, modern girl with a unique style all your own.
Additionally, a great vintage coat never goes out of style. See how model Frankie Adams wears luxe vintage coats from both Elizabeth’s Timeless Attire and Pink Door.
Fortunately, all of these ideas for creating a vintage-inspired look are at our fingertips!
Here are some common questions about vintage:
What should I look for?
As far as things people should look for, I personally don’t look for brands; if I love it I get it! I would say do not go overboard with heavy polyesters, i.e. Brady Bunch looks! Definitely examine the garment. If it’s in mint condition, score! If it has a rip or a hole and you love it, then it’s worth it to take to a tailor or seamstress and have it mended.
What about sizing?
As with all clothing, size differs. Some items run small, some don’t. The beauty of it is that you just never know! The way garments used to be sized and how garments are sized now is very different. Just look around and try on what appeals. And never go into a vintage shop in a rush. Set aside some time so you can look through and perhaps come out with a bag in your hand!
How do I get that “old” smell out of the clothes?
Smell, smell, smell… Yes, a few washings is sometimes necessary to get the older smell out. I hang new vintage items I purchase and let them air out a bit, wash, repeat. It works!
What is a safe bet with vintage?
Louisville has several hotspots for vintage threads: 2023, The Nitty Gritty, The Pink Door and Elizabeth’s Timeless Attire are my favorites, but I look forward to visiting several others and adding on to my ever-growing vintage collection! Happy vintage shopping and happy holidays!
