Heather, Ashley, Katie, Kelsey, Molly & Sophie …
These are the names of the “six sisters” that the new Six Sisters Boutique on Market Street in NuLu is named after. Katie Meinhart, the third sister, is the founder and visionary behind this much-needed retail space. While all of the Meinhart sisters have their own ventures, this sister bond is integral to Katie’s vision for the store, which is why they are included in the name. As she says, “I wanted a place you could come shop and know that we’ve got your back whether you’re a sister or a stranger. Making sales and getting to shop are great, but helping women feel good is really why I love my career, and that’s something that my sisters have helped me be able to do.”
While Katie is only 25 years old, she has known exactly what she wanted to do since she started in the retail business over seven years ago. She never thought she would have the opportunity to own her own store at such a young age, but she has jumped on a shining opportunity to own a clothing boutique at a great location.
Katie acquired the NuLu property late last spring and started remodeling it in June 2017. There were 10 layers of flooring to remove, one more interesting than the next, and new beams were added to shore up the floor, making sure the building was completely safe. After a month of being covered in dust from that flooring work, they spent the next five weeks laying new floors, building fitting rooms and doing drywall. Then the painting began — 12 gallons worth of painting in all was used to paint the entire store, from the walls to the duct and pipe work to the ceilings, you name it. New LED lighting was installed all over the store, even though they have great natural light from the beautiful old windows along the front wall. All of that remodeling happened this summer before their August opening.
Katie describes her aesthetic as “Southern charm, but with an urban industrial feel.” Six Sisters gets a lot of traffic from out-of-towners, looking to see what Louisville fashion and style is all about. Katie keeps the store fresh, chic and trendy, so that anyone from anywhere could buy something and be pleased with their purchase. She also serves a market of working women, who come to her store for a quick shopping experience, whether that be buying a gift or an outfit for themselves. The gift selection is “easy and not kitschy” according to Katie. She also wanted to concentrate on local art and locally sourced gifts in her store. She wants to showcase some of the best things about Louisville.
Six Sisters clothing is trendy, but with a sensible, classic feel — these are definitely clothes that you will want to wear for more than one season. There is also an emphasis on comfort, with cozy sweaters, soft leggings and easy layering pieces throughout the store.
JEWELRY & ACCESSORIES
The jewelry and accessories, like the clothing, are on trend but practical, especially in terms of price. Many of the earrings pictured below are less than $20, and the handbags are affordable as well. The accessories and the jewelry would all complement any item of clothing available at Six Sisters, and they would also make great gifts.
GIFTS & HOME DECOR
Six Sisters tries to locally source most of its inventory for art and home decor. There is a good selection of gifts, such as decorative candles, hand towels and wine glasses, that anyone would love to receive. There is also a great selection of baby gifts in the back of the store, with everything from prints and pillows to onesies and bibs.
With all the girl power behind this store, it is certain to be a success. And the best part about the store’s location, according to Katie, is that “we’ve really gotten a front seat at watching this city transform, especially over the last few years. Hearing stories from people who used to live down here or the visitors who haven’t been to Louisville in years and are just coming back, and also getting to meet people from all over the world … I think there is something really special about knowing you’ve now got a piece of Six Sisters in London, Australia, Tokyo and more!”
