FACES of Louisville: Patti Swope

September 23, 2012 by Heidi Potter

We all feel like we already know Patti Swope since she has been on television for so many years doing the advertisements for her family business, Sam Swope Auto Group. There’s a lot more to Patti than just cars, though. She is an avid animal lover with a passion for rescued animals. She is also quite a golfer. When we photographed her recently, she had just returned from a golf vacation in Scotland. Here’s Patti, in her “element,” in her beautiful, cozy home surrounded by her pets.

You work for the family business.  Is it hard to not “talk shop” around your family?

Definitely. We make an extra effort not to talk shop when we gather.

What is the biggest life lesson you have ever learned?

Be kind and helpful whenever possible. What goes around comes around.

Who is your mentor?

My Dad. As much as I hate to admit it, he’s usually right.

What is best advice you have received in business?

Make sure the customer feels like a winner for doing business with you.

If you weren’t in the car business, what would you secretly love to do?

Be a travel writer.

You are very impressive on camera in your company’s commercials. Did you receive any special training or do you just have the knack?

I haven’t ever received any special training, but I’m sure my first commercials some 15 years ago weren’t quite what they are today. Lots of practice helps.

What was your first car? What do you drive now?

A black Honda Prelude, the first year the model came out. It was hot! I drive a variety of crossover SUVs today.

What is your favorite place to go eat?

Sake Blue sushi in Fern Creek. Best in town!

Where do you like to shop?

Rodeo Drive and Rodes.

What is a treat or a luxury you allow yourself?

Retail therapy definitely takes the edge off.

I know you are an animal lover. How many pets do you have?

Four cats and one dog.

What is your weakness?

Sweets.

What is your favorite thing to do in Louisville?

Enjoy a beautiful day with a walk in the woods with my boyfriend and dog.

What is something you cannot live without (besides God, family and friends):

A good hairstylist – thank you Trudy at Joseph’s. You’re the best!

What are you reading right now?

Just finished Travels with Myself and Another by Martha Gellhorn who was a journalist and the third wife of Ernest Hemingway. Fascinating read.

What are three of your favorite things right now?

  • Graeter’s ice cream
  • Boots
  • A great round of golf

Thank you to Patti! And thanks also to Adele Reding for a great photo shoot despite the rainy, cloudy weather. You would never know how dark and gloomy it was outside from the radiant look on Patti’s face. Both of these women represent the “The Best of the Best.”
