A few months back I met a woman who developed an app. That’s pretty amazing to me. She submitted it to Apple and it was approved, and now they are selling it for $2.99. Let me repeat that: she MADE an APP. That is beyond my levels of comprehension. But I digress. Not only did she make an app, she made a great app.
It is called Menu and Hours. It features over 90 local restaurants, showing their menu and hours. No muss, no fuss, no flash players, no random websites, no outdated products, no strange music, no reviews, no random pictures. Just what you need to know.
The woman behind this app is Michelle Jones. She writes a local blog called Consuming Louisville that focuses on local restaurants and happenings around town. Her motivation for writing this app is pretty much summed up below:
Good restaurant websites with current and relevant information are few and far between. This app is simplifies the process. And in its simplicity, it offers the utmost in function. There’s so much more to this application, as I discovered when I bought it last week.
Not only does it list over 90 local restaurants, but it offers them both alphabetically and by category,
Even better, it also lists hours, address, link to call their phone number and websites.
After this section, it lists the restaurant’s entire menu, complete with prices.
Let’s say you don’t have a particular restaurant in mind, but you do have a certain dish or ingredient you are craving. It’s brunch time and my favorite thing to eat are Migas. (Look it up, non-Texans.) You can search for that exact dish, or an ingredient in the dish. I did a little dance of joy when I discovered this part of the app.
There is a map function on all of the individual restaurants pages, which you can use to get directions. But there is another, cooler map function. You can use your location to see all the restaurants in a 1-mile, 5-mile or city-wide radius from your location. This could determine if you are walking or driving to the restaurant. Or, if you are in a certain neighborhood and want to find a great coffee shop or restaurant, Menu and Hours is a your go-to.
It also lets you keep your favorites on a special list for quick referrals.
Since buying this app, I have literally played with it for hours. It helped us decide our brunch location on Sunday. We called, made a reservation and reviewed the menu, all in about 5 minutes. When we arrived at the restaurant, we all knew exactly what we wanted to order from our advance reading of the menu.
Here is the link to iTunes where you can buy the app: http://itunes.apple.com.
I’ll have you know this is only the second app I have ever paid money for! Well worth it. Cheers to you, Michelle Jones!
