March is going to be a glorious month after two months in a snow cave here in Louisville. My favorite thing about March is that everyone starts gearing up for Derby. Houses are fluffed, spring wardrobes are revitalized and flowers start to bloom.
March 1, 2014: Polar Plunge Louisville!
This is the 16th Polar Plunge in Kentucky — can I hear a brrrrrrrrr??? But, hey, it’s becoming a tradition for many and for some simply a box to check off in “things to do in a lifetime, at least once.” Proceeds benefit the Special Olympics. $75. For details see: soky.kintera.org
March 1, 2014: Speed Art Museum Ball
The 2014 Speed Art Museum Ball will be held on Saturday, March 1 at The Gillespie. The Speed Art Museum Ball, held every year on the first Saturday in March, is the most significant fundraiser for the Speed. The museum is closed during its expansion and has created a satellite space in NuLu, Local Speed, to provide the community with art-related programs for children, families and adults.

March 5, 2014: Tours of the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion
March 5th commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s march on the state capitol of Frankfort. The governor’s mansion is also commemorating its centennial this year. There will be public tours of the governor’s mansion this day. This national landmark has been home to 25 Kentucky governors and is one of only a handful of executive residences in the United States to be open to the public for tours. Have you heard how funny this is? We haven’t seen it, but have heard from others that this is a not-to-be-missed event. From 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Bourbon Women will host its first event of the year at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience located at 528 W. Main St. on Louisville’s historic Whiskey Row.
