Last month, I relished the thought of being out of the snow cave. Considering it was snowing on March 16, I’m not going to mention the weather again. I will mention, however, that April is a VERY busy month around these parts, with everyone gearing up for Derby. Here’s to spring!
April 3, 2014: McDonald’s Thunder Preview Party

April 3, 2014: Hats Off for Hosparus
April 3 from 5 – 7 p.m. is Hats off for Hosparus hosted by Margaret’s Consignments, which is a free event that will include wine and hors d’oeuvres, as well as a silent auction of new and gently used Derby hats, fascinators, jewelry and accessories donated or made by local celebrities. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Hosparus of Louisville, an organization that provides comfort and support for patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. April 9, 2014: Taste of Derby Festival
Wednesday, April 9 is the annual Taste of Derby Festival at Slugger Field from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Dare to Care Food Bank. It features signature dishes from more than 65 of Louisville’s finest restaurants and beverage companies. There is also a bourbon tasting, a Bloody Mary Contest, wine tasting and a silent auction. April 10: Derby Handicapping Happy Hour with Jennie Rees of the C-J

April 11, 2014: The Fillies Derby Ball
The Fillies Derby Ball on Friday, April 11, is one of the Kentucky Derby Festival’s oldest and most anticipated events, held at the Galt House in the Archibald Cochran Room. This event caps the opening day of the Derby Festival and is a prelude to two weeks of excitement and activities. The highlight of the Derby Ball is the coronation of the Derby Festival Queen, to be selected by the traditional spin-of-the wheel. For more information or tickets: discover.kdf.org.
April 11, 2014: KMAC Couture
April 11 is the Second Annual KMAC Couture runway show presented by The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. This event offers a unique way to experience the Museum by featuring emerging and established regional artists, costumers, designers, and milliners and the extraordinary presentation of original couture pieces of wearable art and conceptual fashion designs. In keeping with KMAC’s mission the runway show is a creative way to involve the community in support of innovative craft and design. The proceeds from this event support education and outreach programs at KMAC.

Saturday, April 12 is the annual Thunder Over Louisville. FoodFest and Ford’s Thunder On the Ground open at 11 a.m. Airshow starts at 3 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Starting April 17 through April 27 is the Derby Festival’s Hole in One Contest at Seneca Golf Course Driving Range. Times open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. each of these days. April 17, 2014: Derby Divas Benefit for Norton Cancer Institute Breast Health Program
On Thursday, April 17, the annual Derby Divas event to benefit Norton Cancer Institute Breast Health Program will take place at Rodes from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. There will be specialty drinks, fashion, food provided by Wiltshire Pantry and fun. An annual event benefiting the Norton Cancer Institute Breast Health Program, Derby Divas brings ladies together to raise funds for mammograms for under-served women in our community. The dress is Derby Cocktail Festive (not black tie). All proceeds benefit services at Down Syndrome of Louisville. Each year, an average of 25 babies are born in Louisville area with Down Syndrome.
