BOOKS & PAPER
The Kentucky Derby is the latest book written by sportswriter Bill Doolittle and is an insider’s guide to the Derby. This needs to be on every Louisvillian’s coffee table and is a perfect gift for an out-of-town guest. The pictures, the stories and the new interactive component make it a fresh take on America’s favorite two minutes in sports. It is available for sale online, at Carmichael’s Bookstore and at Dolfinger’s for $50.
Kentucky Derby note cards
Local artist Liesl Long painted this beautiful Derby horse and so graciously made the artwork into note cards, so that we can enjoy her art and share it with others. Think of these note cards when you write your thank-you note to your Derby brunch hostess. These are sold in a pack of five for $20 at Cartwheels.
Dixie Soul Derby T-shirts
Want to talk Derby without having to get all dressed up? Or maybe a fun option for after the Derby festivities are done for the night. Think about these cute Derby T-shirts, part of the Dixie Soul line sold at Blooms by Essential Details in La Grange. They have a gray scoop neck, half-sleeve Derby Y’all for $26, a baseball-style Derby Time for $30 and a plain white Derby Y’all for $20; all have the Dixie Soul logo on the back. Sizes small to XXL are available. If you cannot get out to La Grange to purchase one, feel free to call them at (502) 222-1626 or buy online.
There are lots of flowy, billowy dresses out there for Derby girls. Might I suggest a belt so that you don’t unintentionally look like you are wearing a maternity dress? There are a bevy of options at General Eccentric, and these are just the tip of the iceberg. Good thing is that they are elastic in the back, so you can eat as many Hot Browns as you want when you wear one. The white belt is $14, the red belt is $12 and the tan belt is $11.
Now a man really needs a belt for Derby (and most other days, as well). These are from local company Clayton & Crume and are painted leather belts with Derby themes, such as horses or jockey silks. These retail for $90 at The Shirt Shop.
Vineyard Vines official Kentucky Derby T-shirts

We loved these narrow, modern and impactful horse paintings by Kentucky artist Melissa Crase, who captures the personality of each horse within these frames. Sold at Revelry Boutique Gallery and ranging in price from $95 to $110, we think you should fill your whole wall up, like they have it here.
These Derby pillows, available at Work the Metal, can be customized in all different ways. The jockey silks pillow can be customized to whatever colors you want; you can also pick stripes or polka dots. Each pillow is available in jute for $59 or white canvas for $69. Add your name to the bottom for an extra $10.
Not just any tableware, this is handcrafted at Louisville Stoneware and has an embossed design of a racehorse throughout. Known as the Embossed Running Horse collection, the antique white glaze makes it a neutral that can match any dish on your table, but is distinctly Kentucky proud. The julep cup is $20, the mug is $26 and the plate is $28.
Onesie and rattle
We could not help ourselves with the dose of cuteness on this baby gift. It’s a horse onesie and an accompanying horse hand-knit rattle, all packaged and tied up in a pretty little bow at Animal Crackers. Sold for $29, it is the perfect gift for a Kentucky baby, or a baby who should have been born in Kentucky!
Paint by numbers
Made by local artist Aimee Cecil, these are creative Kentucky Derby-based paint-by-numbers. Definitely marketed for children, these could be enjoyed by all ages, with scenes of the famous twin spires and racing horses. It would make a great Derby day project, as well.
