Is there anyone on Earth that does not like French fries? Fries are one of the most crave-worthy foods — from the most basic fast food fries to the fancier options. Fry up a potato, drizzle some truffle oil and dip in aioli instead of plain old ketchup and you’ve got yourself a fancy fry. The qualifier for what makes something a fancy fry is that you order it for the whole table to enjoy. It’s an appetizer or an entrée, not just a side. Call them frites, fries or fritjes … we’ve sampled many a potato (and oh what a burden it was!) to bring you some of the best fancy fries in town.

As a nod to their Belgian roots, these frites are served over PEI mussels with a tarragon aioli.

As our food writer Lindsey McClave wrote about the steak frites in a review earlier this year, “The Wagyu flank steak is rubbed with brown sugar and cumin and grilled medium rare. A local lettuce mix tossed in a bright sherry vinaigrette is a refreshing accompaniment to the beef but will always play second fiddle to the real reason we love this dish: the frites! La Chasse adds plenty of fresh herbs and reggiano cheese to their frites, guaranteeing you’ll be ordering this dish time and time again.”

What to order: Truffle fries, Grippo fries

Although Hammerheads is known for its unique variety of meats offered, we believe they should be honored for their amazing selection of fries! At Hammerheads in Germantown, you no longer have to choose between duck fat and truffle oil. For all of their fries, have them fried in duck fat for $3. And once you try the mouthwatering combo of truffle oil and duck fat-fried perfection, you’ll never go back. We loved the truffle fries ($5) and the Grippo fries ($4), which are sprinkled with a sweet-and-spicy barbecue seasoning and taste even better when fried in duck fat.

These are classic pommes frites in a classic French restaurant, located off Hurstbourne Lane in the Forum. What to Order: Boniato Frito (sweet potato fries)

¡Me amo Boniato Fritos! Mojito’s sweet potato fries are great to share, but we suggest we order them just for yourself — they are that good! Served with their famous homemade smoked honey, these sweet potato fries, $4, are a sweeter alternative to your average fry. SB Tip: You can also ask for yucca fries with a honey and garlic aioli. They aren’t on the menu, but are an exotic must-try for any fries fan!
