When I asked StyleBlueprint readers and friends where to go to lunch when we went on our shopping trip to Lexington, the overwhelming majority of responders recommended The Mousetrap.
Family owned and operated since 1976, you can see why it’s a Lexington favorite as soon as you walk up. We arrived around 11 a.m. (as part of my Golden Girls lunch schedule) and by 11:15, there was nowhere to sit outside.
The closest thing I can compare this to in Louisville is a cross between The Cheddar Box and Lotsa Pasta. You order from a counter filled with pre-prepared salads and entrees.
There is a small store adjacent to the ordering area with wonderful kitchen wares and specialty food items. They were having a special sale on their Le Creuset and I had to physically remove my hands from the purple dutch oven and walk away.
In addition to the counter items, there is also a menu board above, listing sandwiches, soups and specials. It’s pretty basic, and I like basic.
I asked our server what the most popular items were on the menu. Hands down, she said, it’s the pimento cheese, the clam chowder and the Waldorf salad.
My friend and I could not get over how good the tomatoes looked. How you get a good tomato in late October is a miracle. I ordered a sampler of three salads:
Bengali Chicken Salad, with smoked chicken breast, grapes, artichokes, and wild rice
Artichoke, Hearts of Palm and Tomato Salad
Pasta salad with olive oil, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, black olives and feta cheese
My friend ordered the special California Ciabattini with turkey, avocado, tomato, lettuce and Italian dressing. By 11:10 a.m., these were sold out. She got the last one.
She ordered a side of the Artichoke, Hearts of Palm and Tomato Salad. We agreed it was our favorite thing.
All over the store, they “sugar the trail” with treats. From Key Lime shortbread, to fresh bread, to their praline mustard dip served over cream cheese (see photo below), we made this our appetizer and dessert. So tacky, I know.
All in all, this is a great lunch spot that I highly recommend. I didn’t want to ask how the restaurant got its name, and I probably never will.
Mousetrap is located at 3323 Tates Creek Road in Lexington. Their phone number is 1-859-269-2958. Their website, with a full menu included, is http://mousetrapky.com.
